England electors have picked Australian-born Sam Robson as a backup player for the upcoming 2013-14 Ashes. Robson was included in the performance squad and is in contention for a national call-up for the first time since he started representing Middlesex since 2009.
Both Cricket Australia (CA) and England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) were trying to woo the right-handed batsman. According to an Australian Associated Press report, Australia’s unsettled batting line-up had prompted the selectors to coax Robson to play the Under-19s for New South Wales (NSW). They even relaxed their domestic qualifications regulations to accommodate the batsman, allowing players with dual nationalities to appear for more than one country.
Robson had moved to County cricket after his attempts in the junior levels of NSW weren’t productive. He is the second-highest scorer in Division One of this year’s County Championship with 1,180 runs.
Robson will tour Australia with the England Performance squad along with the Ashes squad ahead of the first Test at the Gabba in Brisbane on November 21.
