England will resume their first innings on 32 for no loss on Day Three of the fifth Ashes Test against Australia at The Oval.
Young Steven Smith scored his maiden Test ton on Day Two as Australia took advantage of the match, declaring their innings at 492 for nine. Smith remained unbeaten on 138. England, meanwhile, finished the day at 32 for no loss trailing Australia by 460 runs. Skipper Alastair Cook was on 17 and Joe Root was on 13.
For Smith, a first hundred in his 12-Test career was all the more welcome as he’d fallen 11 runs short during the drawn third Ashes match in Manchester.
But he achieved the coveted landmark in style Thursday with an on-driven six off occasional medium-pacer Jonathan Trott.
