Bangladesh stun New Zealand with 5-wicket win in Ireland tri-series, Match 6
Tamim Iqbal and Sabbir Rahman got together and stitched 136-run stand for the second wicket, which gave Bangladesh a genuine chance of winning this game.
Bangladesh stunned New Zealand with a 5-wicket victory in Match 6 of the Ireland tri-nation series at Dublin. This is Bangladesh’s first win over New Zealand since November 2013. However, as far as this series is concerned, New Zealand finished on top of the table with 12 points from four matches, while Bangladesh finished second with 10 points from 4 games. Bangladesh’s run chase did not get off to the best of starts. After Tamim Iqbal hit the first ball of the innings off Jeetan Patel for a six, Soumya Sarkar was dismissed two balls later for a golden duck. Tamim and Sabbir Rahman then got together and stitched a 136-run stand for the second wicket, which gave Bangladesh a genuine chance of winning this game. However, Mitchell Santner removed Tamim for 65 and then a comedy run-out saw Sabbir dismissed for 65 as well. Suddenly, Bangladesh had two new batsmen at the crease and felt the pressure. To add to it, Mossadek, who was promoted above Shakib-Al-Hasan, fell for just 4. From 143 for 1, Bangladesh were reduced to 160 for 4 in the 30th over. Even New Zealand lost some quick wickets after an excellent second wicket partnership between Tom Latham and Neil Broom. But New Zealand had the runs on the board and Bangladesh were under pressure at that point. That is when two of Bangladesh’s experienced players – Shakib and Mishfiqur came together. They put on 39 for the fifth wicket, which somewhat steadied Bangladesh’s innings, but Shakib fell for 19 off 32. Mahmudullah came in next and started off slowly, putting more pressure on Mushfiqur. But he picked up pace, keeping Bangladesh in the hunt. They brought up their fifty stand in quick time and Bangladesh looked well on their way to complete a famous win. Mushfiqur was scoring at close to a run-a-ball, and the required run-rate too was under check. Eventually, their unbeaten 72-run stand off just 60 deliveries was good enough to give Bangladesh the win. Mushfiqur finished with run-a-ball 45, while Mahmudullah remained unbeaten on 46 off 36.
Earlier, New Zealand scored 270 for 8 in their 50 overs thanks to fifties from Latham (84), Broom (63) and Ross Taylor (60*). Just like Bangladesh, New Zealand too lost an early wicket, but Latham and Broom added 133 for the second wicket, which gave New Zealand an excellent platform. A mini collapse in the middle saw New Zealand reduced from 156 for 1 to 226 for 7. Luckily, Taylor fought on till the end and ensured New Zealand posted a good total on the board. As far as the Bangladesh bowlers are concerned, Mashrafe Mortaza, Nasir Hossain and Shakib picked up two wickets apiece.
Bangladesh had won the toss and elected to field first. They made just one change to their side, roping in Nasir in place of Shunzamul Hossain, who made his debut in the previous match. New Zealand on the other hand brought in Hamish Bennett, Jeetan Patel and Jimmy Neesham for this match. Both teams will head to England now, where they will take part in the ICC Champions Trophy 2017.
