Few hours ago, news broke out of Sri Lanka limited-overs captain Angelo Mathews‘ injury. According to the latest update, he is ruled out of Sri Lanka’s second ODI in the ongoing Bangladesh tri-nation series versus hosts. A hamstring injury crept up for the 30-year-old during Zimbabwe clash. As a result, Dinesh Chandimal will lead the side in his absence. In addition, Chandimal will be Sri Lanka’s sixth ODI captain since July 2017.
Sri Lanka lost their tournament-opener versus Zimbabwe by 12 runs on Wednesday. They would have hoped for Mathews’ presence, but won’t be the case anymore. Nonetheless, the worrying aspect is that Mathews’ injury stands a chance to rule him out of the entire series. Nothing is confirmed as of now.
“Angelo went for a scan today and the reports have been sent to England for the doctors who have been treating him to take a further look and give us an assessment,” an official told Cricbuzz. Mathews will remain in Dhaka until the assessment is made. A call will be made on whether he needs to remain in Dhaka or fly back home on Friday morning. Sadeera Samarawickrama will be flown in as his stand-by.
Danushka Gunathilaka and Niroshan Dickwella have a chance to replace Mathews in Friday’s encounter versus Bangladesh. Sri Lanka are the only side without a win in the series involving Zimbabwe and Bangladesh.
