Bangladesh made their 100th Test special at P Sara Oval Stadium, Colombo. They registered a historic victory against Sri Lanka, chasing down 191 on the ultimate day with major inputs from Tamim Iqbal and Sabbir Rahman. With the victory, Bangladesh share the Joy Bangla Cup with hosts Sri Lanka. However, there was a lot more to the final day apart from the Tamim-Sabbir partnership. The contribution of tail-enders: Dilruwan Perera and Suranga Lakmal made some crucial contributions down the order for Sri Lanka. After the Sri Lankan middle order collapsed on Day Four, the two took charge and got the score past 135. On final day, they continued their their fireworks, putting up the highest 9th-wicket partnership for Sri Lanka against Bangladesh. The partnership added 80 runs and pushed the target to 191. Perera took his time when his team was losing successive wickets and later hit fearlessly to score a stunning half-century.

Birthday boy’s early scalps: The last thing Bangladesh wanted after giving away too many runs was to lose early wickets. But Herath, the birthday boy, made sure there was even competition. He first removed Soumya Sarkar, who had scored an attractive 61 in the previous innings, for 10. His next prey was Imrul Kayes, who was dismissed for a golden duck the next ball. Two back-to-back wickets sent Bangladesh on the back foot.

The big partnership: Tamim Iqbal emerged as the knight in the shining armour for Bangladesh and found support from a relatively young Sabbir Rahman. The two played with patience and built up the most crucial partnership of the innings. The partnership added 109 runs. Tamim scored 82 and Sabbir added 41 to the board.

A landmark within: Tamim Iqbal became the highest run-getter in Tests for Bangladesh in the fourth innings. He surpassed his teammate Shakib Al Hasan in the process.

Bangladesh create history: After playing 17 Tests with Sri Lanka, Bangladesh managed to post their first victory. Sri Lanka had won 14 of the previous Tests and only two resulted in draw. This was also Bangladesh’s 100th Test, and they became only the fourth country to win emerge triumphant in it.
