The Board of Control for Cricket (BCCI) in India has condoled the death of former Maharashtra player Sunil Gudge. A leg spinner and a useful lower-order batsman, Gudge (56) passed away on Tuesday at his home in Pune following a heart attack. He played 55 first-class games and three List A matches in a career spanning close to 15 years. He later became a match referee and officiated in 17 first-class games, 10 List A games, 11 T20 men’s and seven women’s T20 games, 17 Ranji matches and over 50 age-group matches. Gudge, an important member in the Maharashtra line-up with 110 first-class wickets including five five-wicket hauls, also played two India U-19 matches against Pakistan U-19 in a tri-series also involving Sri Lanka U-19 in 1978-79. He also scored First-Class hundred and even registered five half-centuries. Gudge, an integral part of the strong Maharashtra team of the 1980s led by Raju Balelar, Milind Gunjal and Surendra Bhave, took 110 wickets with 5 for 46 as his best from among five wickets in an innings hauls. He also scored 1,033 runs from 61 innings with a century to boot Gudge was also part of the Under-22 side that played against the visiting England side at Pune in 81-82. He also played for the Board Presidents’ XI against the touring Sri Lanka and West Indies teams of 86-87 and 87-88 at Gwalior and Visakhapatnam respectively.
Gudge was born in Pune in Maharashtra on December 31, 1956. Maharashtra have not been in good form of late and with the current crop of players like Kedar Jadhav, Samad Fallah and others, they will hope that they can reach the heights of the earlier days once again.
