BKS Iyengar, a renowned yoga teacher passed away at the age of 95 in a hospital near Pune on August 20, 2014. Iyengar practiced yoga for close to 80 years and helped many renowned personalities like Sachin Tendulkar and others to overcame various problems through yoga. In January 2014, Iyengar was awarded the Padma Vibhushan, India’s second highest civilian award.
Iyengar once helped Tendulkar to recover from problems with his foot and averted a possible surgery. In a report published by Indian Express in November 2013, Iyengar is quoted as saying, “He had a lot of problems with his foot and his doctor in London had suggested surgery. I saw that the soles of his feet were as hard as rock. We tried a few asanas. About 10 days later, he returned to London for an appointment with the doctor, who said that surgery was no longer necessary.”
Among other cricketers, Iyengar has helped the likes of Anil Kumble, Javagal Srinath and Rahul Dravid.
