Brendon McCullum produced a stunning display of fielding to save a certain six in the Chennai Super Kings (CSK), Dolphins match in the Champions League T20 2014 (CLT20). CSK had posted a mammoth 242 for six in the first innings. There was no option for the Dolphins but hammer their way early in the chase.

In the 16th over of the match, the Dolphins were almost out of the game seven wickets down needing 94 more in 28 balls. Dwayne Bravo bowled the third ball of the over to right-handed Robbie Frylinck. It was in the slot and the batsman smashed it straight back high over the bowler’s head. While the cameraman focused on a white round figure in the dark sky sailing over the fence, as the ball dipped, a man in yellow waited for the ball to descend inches behind him.

McCullum had sprinted from long-on and placed himself underneath the ball. He took a perfectly backward leap and just as he was about to land beyond the boundary, he threw it back in the playing area.

Such catches are not unusual and there have been many of them in the Indian premier League as well. McCullum’s effort was similar to the one that Chris Lynn produced while playing for Kolkata Knight Riders against Royal Challengers Bangalore.
