South Africa bowled out New Zealand for 211 in the second innings, after enforcing a follow-on in the first innings, and thereby won the match by a huge margin of an innings and 193 runs.

Dale Steyn was the pick of the bowlers for the Proteas and took three wickets in the second innings to finish with a match haul of eight scalps.

Fellow pacers Morne Morkel and Rory Kleinveldt chipped in with two wickets each, while spinner Robin Peterson also bagged a brace.

For the Kiwis, the only silver lining in an otherwise dismal show, was the performance of wicketkeeper batsman BJ Watling, who scored 63 in either innings. Watling was the lone rock among the Kiwis as the rest of the batting tumbled against the feared Proteas’ attack.

After being bowled out for 121 in the first innings, New Zealand provided a little more resistance in their second essay with Dean Brownlie also scoring a half-century, while Martin Guptill scored 48.

But it wasn’t enough against the No 1 side in the world who had three centurions in their mammoth first-innings total of 525 for eight declared.

Brief Scores: South Africa 525 for 8 dec. (Faf du Plessis 137, Hashim Amla 110, Dean Elgar 103*; Doug Bracewell 2 for 85) bt New Zealand 121 & 211 (BJ Watling 63, Dean Brownlie 53; Dale Steyn 3 for 48, Morne Morkel 2 for 36, Rory Klienveldt 2 for 44) by an innings and 193 runs
