Hughes was recalled to the Australian Test team in the series against Sri Lanka and was given an ODI debut in the absence of David Warner. He took the opportunity and slammed a century in Australia’s 107-run triumph over Sri Lanka in the first ODI at MCG on Friday.
Mckay, who picked up four wickets in the match, said Hughes’ ability to make a comeback into the side spoke volumes about his work ethic.
“He’s definitely showed a lot of character to probably first of all admit that his technique wasn’t as good as it could have been and he’s gone away and worked unbelievably hard on it,” McKay said, as reported by cricket.com.au
“It’s showing results, he had a great Test series as well against Sri Lanka. To come out and start his one day career the way he did was unbelievable. You can’t give enough credit for what he’s gone on and done and he’s changed his whole game around.
“Making a hundred on debut and being the first Australian player to do that, that’s a great achievement in itself.”
