Corey Anderson needs a break, says New Zealand coach Mike Hesson

Napier: Jan 17, 2014

New Zealand coach Mike Hesson Friday said all-rounder Corey Anderson, who broke the record of world’s fastest One Day International (ODI) century on Jan 1, is fatigued and in need of a break.

Since hitting the world record century off 36 balls on New Year Day, Anderson has managed 29, 0 and six in his last three innings. In the runfest in Hamilton, he managed 1 for 77 off 10 overs and in Wednesday’s Twenty20 finale in Wellington he gave away 50 off four overs.

“Corey’s played a lot more cricket in the last couple of months than he has during his whole career. He’s strung a lot of games together and being an all-rounder it’s tough on the body,” Hesson was quoted as saying by Stuff.co.nz.

“We have to look to manage Corey as well as we can. He’s definitely a little bit fatigued and these next couple of days will be a good break for him. He’s excited about India, as everyone is, but there might be a time in the series where he doesn’t play and that’s a just a matter of managing his loads,” he said.

Either Anderson or fellow all-rounder Jimmy Neesham may miss the ODI series opener in Napier Sunday.

But what may make Hesson happy is the form of wicket-keeper Luke Ronchi, who bagged back-to-back man of the match awards in New Zealand’s 2-0 T20 series win over New Zealand.

“He’s been hitting the ball extremely well in the nets for a few weeks, probably a couple of months. He’s just needed a bit of luck. He’s hit one out of the fat to deep square leg and trod on his stumps. For him to play the way he did, we were all expecting it,” Hesson said.
