Steyn achieved the feat when he had Indian batsman Zaheer Khan caught by wicketkeeper AB de Villiers in the 109th over of the Indian innings.
The right-arm pacer finished with the figures of 30-9-100-6.
Steyn, who had a poor run in the first Test at Johannesburg and was belted for runs on the first day of the second Test by the Indian batsmen, bounced back in a remarkable manner to pull back things for his side.
Opener Murali Vijay missed out on his first Test ton overseas as he was dismissed for 97 by Steyn. A fired up Steyn changed the complexion of the game by picking two more wickets of Cheteshwar Pujara and Rohit Sharma in quick succession.
Pujara was the first to dismissed out for 70 edging the ball to keeper. Vijay on the brink of his fourth Test ton when he was caught behind trying to fend off a short delivery. He soon got his third by getting Rohit for a first-ball duck.
