West Indies T20 captain Darren Sammy, who has played in the Indian Premier League (IPL) in the past for Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) and the Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH), sprang a surprise on Wednesday night when he turned up as a commentator in the ongoing ninth edition of IPL. Sammy began his commentary stint with Mpemelelo Mbangwa and Ramiz Raja in the 32nd match of the IPL 2016 tournament, being played between Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) and the Kings XI Punjab (KXIP) at the iconic Eden Gardens in Kolkata. During the toss, it was Kings XI Punjab (KXIP) captain Murali Vijay who had the coin flipping in his favour, and he decided to field first in overcast conditions. It would have been heartening for Sammy to return to the venue where his side West Indies created history exactly a month ago. West Indies defeated England in the final of the T20 World Cup 2016 in a remarkable manner, with their all-rounder Carlos Brathwaite hitting 4 sixes off the last 4 balls of the match to lead his team to their historic second win in T20 World Cup history. Sammy found himself caught in controversy right after their win, as he slammed the West Indies Cricket Board (WICB) in the post-match presentation. He chose the platform to bare his heart out, and let the world know the problems that the West Indies cricketers had faced during their campaign in the T20 World Cup 2016.
Sammy is not playing in the ongoing IPL 2016, and his international future is also uncertain as he does not have a contract in place with the WICB.
