Delhi Daredevils scored 160 for five against the Kolkata Knight Riders in their Indian Premier League (IPL) 2014 match  at the Feroz Shah Kotla, Delhi. The Delhi innings was a stop start affair as they got going in patches and also lost a bit of momentum mid-way. It was a surge at the end that helped them move towards their eventual score.

On a good batting deck at the Feroz Shah Kotla, Kevin Pietersen won the toss and chose to bat first. Both sides made a change to their line-up. Kolkata got back Jacques Kallis for Andre Russell. Delhi dropped Jaydev Unadkat and fielded Siddharth Kaul.

There was a bit of surprise in store when Suryakumar Yadav opened the bowling and Quinton de Kock smashed the first ball through the cover area for a four. De Kock looked threatening, but he fell in the third over when he tried to cart Umesh Yadav over the top and was caught at mid-on.

Kevin Pietersen had an uncertain innings as the left-arm spin of Shakib Al Hasan was introduced instantly. He kept Pietersen in check and did not let him get around. Narine then came in the and Pietersen hit him for a four over cover. However, Shakib was back and in a way fashioned Pietersen’s dismissal. In an eagerness to get off strike, Pietersen tapped to the off-side and ran without looking at his partner. Vijay had responded and Pietersen was gone. In the powerplay, Kolkata had managed only 29 for two.

That is when Dinesh Karthik came in and took the attack to the opposition. Some of the shots he played were simply brilliant. On one occasion he walked across his stumps to Kallis and scooped him over fine-leg for a six. Vinay Kumar was swept across the line for a four through the leg-side. Even Vijay got into the act when he smashed one down the ground off Vinay Kumar for a six. In 3.3 overs, the pair had added 35 before Vijay holed out to long-on.

Karthik had sped away to 36 off 21 balls before he tried to sweep Shakib and was caught by Kallis in the 12th over. Shakib had a great day with the ball as he recorded figures of one for 13. The move to promote Laxmi Ratan Shukla also didn’t work as he was dismissed for 10 in the 16th over. Delhi had slowed down considerably and it again needed some good work by JP Duminy and Kedar Jadhav to take them to a good total.

There was some delightful shot making on offer when they attacked Kolkata. Even Narine was taken for a few runs in his penultimate over. As many as 17 runs were scored by the batsmen in that over. . In the last four overs, Delhi managed to score 54 runs. Duminy finished with 40 off 38. Narine was hit for a six off the last ball and he finished with figures of one for 38.

Brief scores:

Delhi Daredevils 160 for 5 in 20 overs (Dinesh Karthik 36, JP Duminy 40*; Shakib Al Hasan 1 for 13) vs Kolkata Knight Riders.
