Once again riding on a magnificent century from Dinesh Karthik, Tamil Nadu defeated the Parthiv Patel-led India B by 43 runs, in Deodhar Trophy 2016-17 final at Visakhapatnam. Tamil Nadu had set India B a target of 304 to win, but despite their best efforts, India B fell short. India B scored over 300 in their other two matches in the tournament and would have fancied chasing down this without many qualms. However, baring an 81-run stand between Shikhar Dhawan and Manish Pandey for the second wicket, India B did not have any substantial partnerships. Gurkeerat Singh’s fifty kept India B’s hopes alive towards the end, in which he also put on 56 runs for the sixth wicket with Akshay Karnewar. However, both Gurkeerat and Karnewar were dismissed almost one after the other and with that, any chance of India B’s victory in the final vanished. India B were dealt with a major blow when Pandey had to retire hurt for 23. He, however, came out to bat after Gurkeerat’s dismissal, but could not make a huge impact as he was stumped for 32. Pandey’s wicket proved to be the final nail in India B’s coffin as Tamil Nadu removed the last couple of batsmen quickly.

Rahil Shah – who dismissed Gurkeerat and Pandey in the same over — was Tamil Nadu’s pick among the bowlers. He finished with the figures of 3 for 40 in his 10 overs.

Earlier, Tamil Nadu won the toss and elected to bat. Tamil Nadu did not get off to the best of starts as they found themselves reduced to 39 for 3 in the 11th over. That was when Karthik and N Jagadeeshan joined hands, and put on 136 runs for the fourth wicket, which brought Tamil Nadu back into the match.

Jagadeeshan was eventually dismissed caught behind for a well made 62-ball 55. Karthik kept getting runs at a brisk pace and brought up his century off just 76 deliveries. He added 66 for the fifth wicket with skipper Vijay Shankar before falling to Akshar Patel for 126 off 91. Dhawal Kulkarni bowled well throughout the match to finish with 5 for 39 in his 10 overs.

Baba Indrajith played well with tail to ensure Tamil Nadu get a score over 300. With this emphatic win, Tail Nadu now have their hands on the Vijay Hazare Trophy and now the Deodhar Trophy as well.
