During the on field interview, AB de Villiers had mentioned that Bangalore were 20-30 runs short. Sunil Narine provided the perfect start in the Powerplay with his 17-ball 50, for second time in the Indian T20 league. That allowed the likes of Nitish Rana, Dinesh Karthik and Andre Russell to pick their moments in the game. Karthik, in particular, anchored the innings in the death overs. He also allowed Rana and Russell to take the centre stage in the middle overs. Ultimately, Karthik’s unbeaten 29-ball 35 handed Kolkata their first win in the tournament.

A star-studded Bangalore saw only Brendon McCullum, AB de Villiers and Mandeep Singh take the score to 176 for 7. Quinton de Kock, Sarfraz Khan and even Virat Kohli struggled to get going. Here is how the teams have fared after their first match:

Not much of a difference between both the teams. Had it not been for Karthik, Narine, Vinay Kumar, Nitish Rana’s collective efforts, Bangalore would have won despite a sub-par total.
