England in command of second Test after spinners stifle India

Mumbai: Nov 25, 2012

England took control of the second Test against India at the Wankhede Stadium, after Monty Panesar (five for 61) and Graeme Swann (two for 39) ran through the Indian batting line-up in the final session of day three. India limped to 117 for seven at stumps, leading England by 31 runs with three wickets in hand.

The two English spinners shared all of the six Indian wickets between them, with Monty taking four, thereby giving India a taste of their own medicine. The duo put the home side in complete command of the match going into the last two days of the match.

Virender Sehwag, playing in his 100th Test, was the first to go, edging Panesar to gully after playing forward to an away-spinning length ball.

England’s tormenter with the bat in this series, Cheteshwar Pujara, didn’t last long as Jonathan Bairstow took a superb catch at forward short-leg after Swann found the Saurashtra batsman’s inside edge.

Local boy Sachin Tendulkar isn’t in the best of forms and his barren patch continued as Panesar trapped the little master in front on the backfoot. Virat Kohli, Yuvraj Singh and MS Dhoni too didn’t trouble the scorers much as England used India’s biggest weapon in the series against them.

India went to stumps with Gautam Gambhir, who played a watchful and defiant 53 off 109 balls, and Harbhajan Singh (one not out), at the crease.

Earlier in the day, Pragyan Ojha dismissed Kevin Pietersen (186) after the latter played a blinder-of-an-innings to help England go past India’s first innings total of 327.

Pietersen’s innings of 186, included 20 fours and four sixes as he took the attack to the Indian bowlers.

Earlier, Pietersen and Alastair Cook both notched up their 22nd Test centuries and recorded the highest third-wicket partnership at the Wankhede, putting up 206 runs. The previous record was 194 runs set by Sachin Tendulkar and Vinod Kambli against England.

Ravichandran Ashwin (one for 105), who had been wicketless so far, finally got the breakthrough with half an hour left to go for lunch.

Brief Scores: India 327 and 117 for 7 (Gautam Gambhir 53*; Monty Panesar 5 for 61, Graeme Swann 2 for 39) lead England 413 (Kevin Pietersen 186, Alastair Cook 122; Pragyan Ojha 5 for 143 ) by 31 runs.
