England chose to ignore Kevin Pietersen — who has been in red-hot form — as they announced their squad for the ICC World T20 2016 tournament to be held in India next month. England have selected a rookie spinner in Liam Dawson, whereas they retained Steven Finn but axed their all-rounder Chris Woakes. For those uninitiated, Dawson is a left-arm orthodox spinner who has been selected in the touring party. He has played as many as 105 First-Class matches, in which the 25-year-old cricketer has 110 wickets to his name. It was, however, not surprising to see Pietersen being ignored as England captain Eoin Morgan had shut the doors for his comeback in T20 side as well. It was not surprising to see Pietersen being ignored once again by England. Pietersen has been in terrific form, especially in Twenty20 cricket. He had a very successful time in the Big Bash League (BBL) tournament, and it will only be England’s loss by not selecting a player who is not only in form, but is also aware of the conditions in India.
England’s national selector, James Whitaker, was quoted as saying by England and Wales Cricket Board’s (ECB) official website, “The limited-overs cricket played in the last eight months has been incredibly exciting to watch and these players deserve the honour of representing England at a global event. We have made significant progress during recent series with plenty more to come over the next few years.”
“Liam Dawson has been selected after consistently strong performances for the Lions recently against Pakistan A. As a left-arm spinning all-rounder he will be a very useful addition particularly in sub-continent conditions. Congratulations to all selected and on behalf of the selectors good luck to Eoin and Trevor,” Whitaker added. The director of England cricket, former captain Andrew Strauss said, “Mahela [Jayawardene] and Paul [Collingwood] proved very popular additions to the coaching team when they spent time with England in the UAE earlier this winter and I’m delighted that they are both able to help our T20 side. Their international experience, previous success at World T20 tournaments and, particularly in Mahela’s case, knowledge of conditions make them ideal resources to tap into and I have no doubt the players will gain a huge amount from having them around the dressing room.”
