England won the series opener at Headingley in a convincing manner by 72 runs. South Africa faltered in chase of 340 and they will soon need to get act together, as upcoming challengers can be expected to be run fests. In what panned out as a battle of the equals, England dismantled South Africa across departments. With a win under their belt, the home side will be eager to notch up an unassailable lead in the second ODI at The Rose Bowl, Southampton, and look to experiment in the third and final ODI at Lord’s.

The head to head record at Southampton stands in favour of South Africa. Both teams clashed in the five-ODI series in 2012 where the visitors beat hosts by 80 runs to take a 1-0 lead. There are as many five South African players from that match who are still active, while only Eoin Morgan for England has made it so far. Thankfully for the home side, skipper Morgan’s change of fortunes in the first ODI holds well for them. Morgan batted with composure and calmness en route his ton.
