South Africa are at 281 for four in their second innings chasing a 458-run target against India on Day Five of the first Test in Johannesburg. Faf du Plessis is batting on 54 and AB de Villiers is on 57 after 89 overs. South Africa need only 177 runs to win the match at the New Wanderers Stadium.
The Proteas began the day on 138 for two. Alviro Petersen was the first wicket to fall so far for 76 off 162 balls. He was bowled by Mohammed Shami. The ball was on a length outside off-stump, but Petersen got a thick inside edge onto it as the ball crashed into the stumps.
Kallis was then out leg-before for 34 off 37 balls to Zaheer Khan. This was Zaheer’s 300th wicket in Test cricket. The ball did get a deflection off the bat onto the pads, but the umpire raised his finger as soon as the Indians appealed.
The partnership between du Plessis and de Villiers is worth 84 runs. This is du Plessis’ third half-century in Test cricket. De Villiers has scored his 34th half-century.
