Former Australian fast bowler Max Walker leaves us at an age of 68 after battling cancer for two years. Walker is well known for his unusual bowling action. He complemented fast bowling legends Dennis Lillee and Jeff Thompson back in his days. Walker’s bowling action was such that he often landed on the wrong foot while releasing the ball, hence the nickname, ‘tangles’. He was not feeling well in the past few days, as revealed by former Australia captain Ian Chappell. The cricketing world has come forward and paid their condolences to Walker after he lost the battle to ‘cancer’ on Wednesday.
Chappell told The Guardian, that Walker was ‘in a bad shape’. Commentator Kerry O’Keefe too expressed his sadness in hsi tweet saying, “gentle … decent … respectful” man: “Vale T Foot!”. In an official statement, Chief Executive Officer of Cricket Victoria said, “It is with great sadness that we learned of Max’s sudden passing today. We offer our heartfelt condolences to the Walker family and their friends at this difficult time. A gentlemen of his era, Max was able to be part of some moments that will be cherished forever in cricket history and will continue to inspire future generations.”
Another former Australian cricketer, Dean Jones termed the incident as ”so sad” as soon as he got the news. Jones said, “What a great cricketer, author and story teller. Ripper bloke whose smile lit up a room!” he signed off with the hashtag “#263” – Walker’s baggy green cap number.”
