Retired South African Test captain Graeme Smith has admitted that he started considering retirement in July last year when former coach Gary Kirsten left the team set-up. Smith, who announced his retirement during the middle of the third Test against Australia, struggled in the series with just 45 runs in six innings, and said the decision to retire had weighed heavily on his mind.

According to Sport24, Smith revealed that he had been considering retirement since Kirsten left the team, adding that it has been a period of time processing his decision. Smith further said that although he felt he could have performed over a few more years, he however, had a real peace once he took the decision as he felt he performed well during the last two Test series. Smith said it would have been a dream come true if his team won a World Cup during his time in charge.
