As we kick-start the Caribbean Premier League (CPL) 2016 lets have a glance at one of the founding teams of the tournament. The Guyana Amazon Warriors were present in the inaugural season of CPL in 2013 as one of the six team who played the season. As the name suggests Amazon Warriors are Guyana based team which plays it matches at Providence Stadium in the same city. Warriors had a great start to CPL coming out as runners-up in the first season itself losing out to Jamaica Tallawahs by 7 wickets. The team back then was skippered by West Indies great Ramnaresh Sarwan had the likes of Tillakaratne Dilshan, Lasith Malinga alongside Sunil Narine and Denesh Ramdin.
2014 saw a change of guard as of guard as with Sunil Narine taking over as skipper from Sarwan. That season they brought in players like Guptill, James Neesham and Mohammad Hafeez. Lendl Simmons was the star of the tournament with the bat making as many as 445 runs in th CPL edition 2014. They finished runners-up in the season after Barbados Tridents won the match by just 8 runs thanks to the forever debated D/L method. The 2015 season saw them lead by West Indies wicketkeeper batsmen Denesh Ramdin who was with them since season 1.
The Warriors already had a star-studded line-up in Malinga, Thisara Perera, Dilshan, Brad Hodge, Marchant de Lange, David Wiese and Umar Akmal to compliment the likes of Narine and Veerasammy Permaul who spearheaded the West Indies contingent in the team. Having qualified second from the group they were defeated by eventual CPL 2015 champions Trinbago Knight Riders in the semi-finals by 6 wickets. This season saw Warriors announce a team head coach for the first time in former West Indies player Roger Harper.
In the player auction for CPL 2016, Warriors picked up international super stars like Guptill, Sohail Tanvir, Dwayne Smith, Chris Lynn and Adam Zampa. They also announced Guptill as their skipper in this season of CPL 2016. Warriors will be happy to have Zampa, Smith,Lynn who are coming off a great Indian Premier League season in India. Zampa along with Devendra Bishoo could be lethal force to reckon with the ball on West Indian pitches.
