Born on November 5, 1988, Virat Kohli turns 27 today. Kohli, born and raised in Delhi, took a liking to sport at a young age and soon singled out cricket as the sport that he specialised in. His talents were acknowledged at the age of just 17 when he made his List A debut for Delhi. It didn’t take him a whole lot of time to impress national selectors at the age group levels. Before long he was captaining India in the under-19 ICC World Cup in 2008 and led his side to glory. Since then he has scaled new heights and today holds the prestigious position of being India’s Test captain.
The ICC Cricket World Cup U-19 tournament, which first made Kohli’s presence felt globally, highlighted not only his captaincy skills, but also his impressive batting skills as he finished the third-highest run scorer in the tournament. Over the years he only improved even as he was given the big platform in the senior One-Day International (ODI) side while he was yet to complete 20 years of age.
His blossoming in the Test-match format has not been as rapid nor has it been as ground-breaking as his limited-overs success. But, only a fool will dare to label him as a short-form specialist. In 37 Tests he has played in so far, he has already accumulated 11 hundreds in addition to 11 fifties. His average of 45 is no mean feat either. He has scaled the heights slowly in the games premier format and his ascend as a batsman continues. His unquestionable leadership abilities meant he became India’s obvious Test captain following MS Dhoni‘s retirement from the format in early 2015.
