Travis Head may have fixed his spot in the Australian side for One-Day Internationals (ODIs) in the past year or so, but the dilemma prevails over who will be selected as David Warner’s opening partner for the ICC Champions Trophy 2017. Australia are spoilt for choices with explosive batsmen Chris Lynn and Aaron Finch coming back into the 15-man squad for the tournament starting next week. Australia are placed in Group A along with hosts England, New Zealand and Bangladesh. The Steven Smith-led team would play their first match against New Zealand on June 2 in Birmingham, and on his part, Head says he is ready to bat anywhere from No. 1-6. “My game can be adapted to bat from one to six. So I haven’t really thought about that too much. I’ve been working hard on it over the last few seasons. In case I miss out with the bat, I can still give something to the team with the ball or in the field. So if it’s needed throughout the tournament … I’m not going to be out there to win games of cricket with my bowling, but if I can do a job for the team and get them to that position, then that’s fantastic,” Head was quoted as saying by cricket.com.au.

Head was involved a record-breaking opening partnership with Warner against Pakistan in the fifth and final ODI of their series, which was of 284 runs. Despite achieving such a feat, Australia are facing a conundrum related to their openers. On his part, Head is confident to at least find a place in the side come June 2.

“I feel like I’ve been putting in some good performances and I’ve been pretty consistent since I’ve started. And that’s all you can ask for, is to keep putting up reasonable scores. I was looking for that during the summer and I wanted that big score so it was nice to get a hundred (on Australia Day). I finished reasonably well in the Australian summer and hopefully I’ll get the nod (to play NZ). It’s my first time being in a really big tournament so I’m really looking forward to it,” Head added.
