This is the fifth time that only three men have batted in an innings that has lasted 300 or more balls. Three of these occasions have in World Cups, the first being at Edgbaston in 1979 — when Gordon Greenidge and Viv Richards chased down India’s score after Desmond Haynes was dismissed — albeit in a 60-over match. They scored 194 for one, the exact same score Barry Wood, Chris Tavare, and Allan Lamb did at Headingley in 1982 against — India. It was a 55-over encounter.
Upul Tharanga, Mahela Jayawardene, and Angelo Mathews batted a full 50 overs at Sabina Park in 2013, thus being the first trio to do it batting first. Two days before the Bangladesh vs Sri Lanka clash, West Indies lost Dwayne Smith in the second ball of the match before Chris Gayle and Marlon Samuels batted out the rest of the 50 overs (though Gayle was dismissed in the last ball of the innings).
