Colombo: Oct 5, 2012

A half-century by opener Chris Gayle and slog-hitting by Kieron Pollard in death overs powered West Indies to 205 against Australia in the second semi final match of the World T20 at Colombo on Friday.

The duo added 65 runs for the fourth wicket before Pollard was dismissed off the last ball of the innings for 38 runs. Pollard hit three sixes while Gayle it one six off the last over as West Indies cruised past 200.

Earlier, winning the toss, West Indies captain Darren Sammy opted to bat first. Openers Gayle and Johnson Charles gave an explosive start at the top.

Charles, however, departed in the third over after scoring ten runs.

Gayle continued to bludgeon the Australian bowlers. He was given good support by all-rounder Dwayne Bravo (37) as the duo put on 83 runs for the third wicket.

For Australia, it will be a chance to get into the final for the second time in succession after the 2010 edition and once again stamp their class as world’s premier cricketing outfit.

For West Indies, it’s more about the identity and trying to fight the inner demons which have affected their cricket since late 80′s.

A berth in the final of a global event can be a big boost for the Caribbean nation where basketball, athletics and soccer have captured the imagination of the masses.

Brief Scores: West Indies 205 for 4 in 20 overs (Chris Gayle 75*, Kieron Pollard 38, Dwayne Bravo 37; Pat Cummins 2 for 36) vs Australia
