It is the lowest score in T20 cricket as Netherlands were bowled out for 39 by Sri Lanka in their ICC World T20 2014 contest at Chittagong. The Sri Lankan bowlers were just too good for the Dutch. After all the promise of their thrilling win over Ireland in the qualifying stage, this is a rude shock for Netherlands.

Stephan Myburgh, the star of the previous game was the first to go. Off the third ball of the innings, he went for the upper-cut and offered a catch to Lasith Malinga at third-man. In the second over, Michael Swart tried to hit across the line and it took the top-edge. Kumar Sangakkara took a neat catch. And it just got worse as Wesley Barresi smashed the next ball straight into Dinesh Chandimal’s hands at cover.

There was a bit of an anti-climax then as the lights went out and Mathews had to wait for his hat-trick ball. Peter Borren calmly let that ball go once play resumed. However, through the innings, Netherlands had no answer to Sri Lanka’s bowlers. Tom Cooper looked the only one who had some answer, but then Ajantha Mendis trapped him leg-before for 16 in the eighth over. His brother Ben Cooper had been dismissed run-out the over before that.

Once Tom Cooper was dismissed with the score on 33 for six, Netherlands were never really in it. Malinga and Mendis then finished the innings with ease.

Brief scores:

Netherlands 39 all out in 10.3 overs (Tom Cooper 16; Angelo Mathews 3 for 16, Ajantha Mendis 3 for 12, Lasith Malinga 2 for 5, Nuwan Kulasekara 1 for 0) vs Sri Lanka.
