While there are enough speculations being made on Anil Kumble–Virat Kohli’s rift and with the hunt for the next head coach going full swing, India’s fielding coach R Sridhar feels the next coach should be in sync with the team demands in today’s era. Sridhar has been part of the Team India support staff for three years and has worked under Ravi Shastri as well as Kumble. However, Sridhar admitted that both the coaches had their own style of functioning. The reports on their rift started making rounds during ICC Champions Trophy 2017. The reports suggested that Kohli was unhappy with Kumble’s working style. Kohli had even met Committee of Administrators (CoA) during the tournament regarding the same.
Kumble’s tenure was even extended until the West Indies tour. However, sudden change of events forced Kumble to step down from his position. Ahead of the first One-Day International (ODI), Kohli had mentioned that sanctity of dressing room should be maintained. He also added that all players respect Kumble as a player. Speaking on Kohli’s mindset, Sridhar said, “What’s important in today’s cricket as a leader is to follow the energies within the group. It’s important to be receptive. You have to yield to the demands of the group and you have to make sure that each guy is in the best possible space.”
“The current Indian team has some great experience. So we should allow that experience to take over and be inclusive and take the best possible decisions for the team. What is important to be a good leader is to be a good follower,” he was quoted as saying by Indian Express.
Sridhar also mentioned that Kumble and Kohli had same intentions i.e. “making India the best cricket-playing nation in the world,” however, their approaches were different. Shastri has now joined the race for head coach role as well. Sridhar, on the other hand, was unaware about him re-applying for the position.
