India opted to bat against Afghanistan in the latter’s maiden Test. Shikhar Dhawan and Murali Vijay made full advantage of the batting pitch by building a partnership of 168 runs for the opening wicket. Dhawan took charge in the first session, becoming the sixth batsmen to score a ton before lunch on Day One of a Test. He was in prime form smashing the ball in every corner of the ground. He was out just after lunch for a 96-ball 107. His innings included 19 fours and 3 sixes.

The match was then interrupted by rain several times which called for early tea. Vijay also scored a century but was soon dismissed by Wafadar Mohand. KL Rahul fell to Yamin Ahmadzai after reaching his fifty. These two wickets brought Afghanistan back into the match. Rashid Khan, hammered by Dhawan, got his first wicket in the 67th over when he dismissed Ajinkya Rahane for 10. Afghanistan maintained the pressure as they ended up picking 6 Indian wickets for 347 at stumps.
