Former India spin bowler, Anil Kumble, said Thursday that Rohit Sharma was disappointed with his own approach, getting out cheaply at 32, failing to convert a start against Australia at Brisbane. He added that Rohit Sharma should have waited to settle down before going for the expansive drive he got out to.

He wrote in his column for Times Of India, “Rohit (Sharma) had spent time in the middle on Day One but played that expansive drive too early on Thursday morning.”

He emphasized that, it was not a wise call to go for shots, given the ball was still new. “At Brisbane, in most grounds actually, the ball always does something early on and it was still a new ball to boot, so Rohit should have waited and settled in further.

Kumble was all praise for Murali Vijay, who scored a 144, “You have to admire Murali Vijay. It’s imperative, more so in tough overseas conditions, that a batsman in form carries on. He has to take on additional responsibility and ensure that someone who is out of form will have some time to come good and Vijay did just that. He didn’t waste a good start to the series.”

Praising India’s lower order he added, “Fortunately for India the lower order contributed something unlike in Adelaide, and that’s how India were able to add nearly a 100 runs on Day Two.”

He attributed the lower order batting performance in part to Ravichandran Ashwin. He said, “The inclusion of Ashwin certainly helped there.” Kumble was of the view that Australia were on the backfoot because of wickets by Ashwin and Umesh Yadav. “It’s good that the duo (Ashwin and Yadav) picked up wickets too to somewhat have Australia on the backfoot”
