India vs England: Sourav Ganguly, Jagmohan Dalmiya stands to be unveiled ahead of 3rd ODI
With the army being the custodian of the Maidan, where the Eden Gardens is located, its permission is mandatory before any such decisions can be implemented.
Former India captain and Cricket Association of Bengal (CAB) president Sourav Ganguly on Saturday said the stand to be named after him at the Eden Gardens will be unveiled on Sunday when India play England in the third ODI here. “Tomorrow four [stands] will be unveiled and four will be done later. The four for tomorrow are [Jagmohan] Dalmiya, B.N. Dutt, Pankaj Roy and mine,” Ganguly told reporters. “The other four will be on the names of A.N. Ghosh, J.C. Mukherjee and two army officials,” Ganguly said. The army was kind enough to allow us to name the stands. In 2009, Mr. Dalmiya had requested them for the same,” Ganguly said.
Asked how he feels about his name now being etched in Eden folklore, Ganguly said, “It’s a huge honour and I thank the working committee and Biswaroop [Dey, former CAB treasurer] for proposing my name.” The proposal had been passed in the CAB working committee meeting last year. But with the army being the custodian of the Maidan, where the Eden Gardens is located, its permission is mandatory before any such decisions can be implemented. Ganguly was being tipped to be the next BCCI president, but has said that he has not thought of what future holds for him. “I have not thought about anything. We will see what needs to be done,” said Ganguly who is currently holding the post of Cricket Association of Bengal (CAB) president.
The former India captain also dismissed reports that he has resigned from the CAB President’s post. “I have not done so,” he replied curtly, when asked whether he has quit CAB chief’s post.
