Gautam Gambhir may play at Eden Gardens, Kolkata in the second Test against New Zealand as KL Rahul has suffered a right-hamstring injury. Rahul suffered the injury during India’s second innings in the first Test at Kanpur. His injury has opened the doors for veteran opener Gambhir who has been out of the Test side for more than two years. Rahul did not even come out to field following the injury as Shikhar Dhawan replaced him on the field. Injury-struck opener is getting the treatment as the fitness coaches are trying to get him fit for the second Test which is also India’s 250th home Test which will feature former Indian skipper Kapil Dev ringing the bell much like Lord’s cricket ground.
According to India Today’s sources Gambhir is highly likely to replace Rahul for the second Test. A lot of buzz surrounded when Sandeep Patil announced India’s Test squad for home series against New Zealand. People expected Gambhir to make a comeback following his performance in domestic circuit and recently concluded Duleep Trophy where he captained India Blue to the first-ever pink ball and day-night Duleep Trophy tournament played at Greater Noida. Fans expressed their disappointment when he was not selected in the team as they expressed their opinions on Twitter.
Gambhir looked in good form all along leading the side from the front and sharing partnerships with fellow opener Mayank Agarwal giving his side the start they wanted. Gambhir has been instrumental for Kolkata Knight Riders as well, performing well with the bat and also captaining the side.
