The third and final T20 International (T20I) between India and South Africa at Eden Gardens has been abandoned without a single ball being bowled due to wet outfield. The rain had stopped but the groundsmen were unable to clear the water from the stadium and as a result the outfield was extremely wet. The match therefore had to be abandoned and as a result South Africa have won the series 2-0, after comprehensive wins at Dharamsala and Cuttack. India would have wanted to register a win and salvage some pride in the series ahead of the One-Day International (ODI) series, which begins in a few days time. The match officials believed that it could be hazardous to the players and could cause some injuries if the play happened. There were multiple inspections, but the officials did not seem confident of starting the match at any point. In the first T20I at Dharamsala, Rohit Sharma scored an excellent ton, which took India to 199. But an unbeaten fifty from JP Duminy was good enough to ensure that the Proteas started the series with a seven-wicket win.
At Cuttack, India were bowled out for their second lowest score in T20Is when they were bowled out for just 92. India did manage to pick up four wickets, but they did not have enough runs on the board, as South Africa sailed home with a four-wicket win. Cuttack also saw a horrific incident where the fans through bottles into the ground, expressing their frustration due to India’s poor performance. The match was interrupted twice before the security personnel got things under control.
