India and South Africa face off on the opening day of the third Test at the VCA Stadium in Jamtha, Nagpur on Wednesday. India are currently leading the four-match series 1-0 after a 108-run win in the opening fixture of the series at Mohali, thanks to the efforts of the spin duo of Ravichandran Ashwin and Ravindra Jadeja, who shared a total of 16 wickets among themselves in the match. The second match saw the Indian spinners triumph over the South African batsmen once again, with AB de Villiers putting up a gritty 85 in his 100th Test appearance. South Africa will look to pull off a magical act, in the absence of Dale Steyn, to keep themselves alive in the current series and maintain their nine-year undefeated overseas Test series record. Steyn is yet to recover from the groin injury that he sustained during the first Test, having missed out on the second Test as well. Marchant de Lange will hope to make his mark in the series after being called in as a cover for Steyn, while Morne Morkel will look to step out of Steyn’s shadow in Tests, and lead the attack on a track that is known to be supportive for pacers. Steyn had wreaked havoc on this venue against India five years ago in a two-Test series, which resulted in South Africa thrashing India comfortably by an innings.
