India have summoned Mumbai pacer Shardul Thakur to join the Test side in South Africa. The decision came a day after India went conceded the Test series 0-2 at Centurion. Thakur will be boarding the flight to Johannesburg on late Friday. He has been withdrawn from Mumbai’s T20 squad for Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy.
“We were informed by the BCCI that he (Thakur) will be going to South Africa soon which has meant that we’ve had to find a replacement for him at the last moment,” Unmesh Khanvilkar, Mumbai Cricket Association (MCA) joint secretary, told The Indian Express.
The Indian Test squad already has five pacers (Ishant Sharma, Mohammed Shami, Umesh Yadav, Bhuvneshwar Kumar and Jasprit Bumrah) and Hardik Pandya. It is not clear why Thakur left to join the squad early. He was expected to join the squad for the ODI series.
Thakur will be accompanied by Delhi’s Navdeep Saini, who is expected to be one of the net bowlers. Ankit Rajpoot, Mohammad Siraj, Avesh Khan and Basil Thampi have travelled with the national side to bowl in the nets.
Earlier, chairman of selectors, MSK Prasad had hinted that some of the ODI players may go to South Africa early to get acclimatised to the conditions.
