Sri Lankan opener Upul Tharanga became the third batsman to register 1,000 ODI runs in 2017. The 32-year-old got to the mark when he reached 85 against India in the ongoing ODI at Visakhapatnam. He hoiked Yuzvendra Chahal’s leg-spinner over long-on for six to reach there. Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma are the only other cricketers to have breached the 1,000-mark in ODIs this year.

Tharanga was recently replaced as the ODI skipper after Sri Lanka suffered defeats in 12 consecutive ODIs. Tharanga at helm suffered three 0-5 whitewashes this year. However, all that did not have an effect on Tharanga’s form.

This has been by far the best year for Tharanga. His previous best was 826 runs in 2011. He had then registered 4 hundreds in the year and averaged 45.88 while his strike rate was just over 91. A reinvented Tharanga averages close to 50 this year and his strike rate is over 91.
