West Indies openers Chris Gayle and Kieran Powell started off cautiously on Day One in the first Test against India at Eden Gardens on Wednesday. After six overs the visitors were 23 for no loss with Gayle on 17 and Powell on six.
Gayle scored a boundary on the first ball off Bhuvneshwar Kumar when the ball took a thick edge flew past the gully fielder for a boundary. Debutant Shami Ahmed in the next over got a ball to move back in sharply which hit Powell high on his pads. Both the pacers rely on swing and thrive on earning lateral movement from the wicket.
Though Gayle got a few boundaries most of them were not as convincing as one expects him to hit. Twice he was beaten by the uneven bounce of the wicket.
This is Sachin Tendulkar’s penultimate Test. The maestro is set to retire after his 200th Test.
