India Women put up a poor total of 180 against South Africa Women in the third One-Day International (ODI) at M Chinnaswamy Stadium, Bangalore on Friday. Shikha Pandey scored a 60-ball 59 and Harmanpreet Kaur came up with a good innings of 42 down the order to help boost India Women at the death.
The hosts started poorly, with openers Smriti Mandhana and Poonam Raut putting on just eight runs. New batswoman Deepti Sharma could score just a run in the six and a half overs she batted before being run out. India were in a lot of trouble at nine for two in 11.2 overs, with Poonam and Shikha in the middle.
Poonam laboured away to 16 off 54 deliveries before getting stumped by Trisha Chetty off Dane Van Niekerk. New batswoman Mithali Raj then put on a good stand with Shikha, with the former scoring 23 before being dismissed. Shikha was out immediately after that for 59. At 109 for five in 30.5 overs, India’s innings was in danger of meandering away to a terribly sub-par total.
That united Harmanpreet with Vanitha Vellaswam, and the pair added a crucial 42 runs. Vanitha was dismissed for 13, but Harmanpreet battled on, scoring at better than a run-a-ball. She was finally out in the 45th over for a well-made 42. Jhulan Goswami was out soon, followed almost immediately by Sushma Verma and Shubhalakshmi Sharma as India were bowled out for just 180. India’s last four wickets fell for just four runs. Earlier, South Africa Women won the toss and asked India Women to bat.
Brief scores:
India Women 180 in 47.3 overs (Shikha Pandey 59, Harmanpreet Kaur 42; Marcia Letsoalo 3 for 46, Sunette Loubser 3 for 28) vs South Africa Women.
