India Women swept South Africa Women aside in the second ODI at Kimberley. First Smriti Mandhana starred with her record score of 135. It was followed by quickfire fifties from Veda Krishnamurthy and Harmanpreet Kaur. Defending 302, the Indian spinners had a day out. Poonam Yadav bagged 4 wickets while Deepti Sharma, Rajeshwari Gayakwad ended with 2 wickets each. Jhulan Goswami had a match to remember: she added another feather to her cap, becoming the first bowler in ODI history to take 200 wickets. With this, India have clinched the series by 2-0 against South Africa and will aim for a whitewash in the final match at Potchefstroom.

The match as it happened…

Chasing a humongous 303, South Africa Women were off to a decent start. Laura Wolvaardt and Lizelle Lee began the chase with a series of boundaries against Shikha Pandey and Jhulan — till the later sent Laura back.

Despite the quick start, South Africa were unable to create big partnerships. They once again found themselves in the same spot as in the first ODI. Misjudgements and accurate bowling by Indian bowlers saw South African wickets falling like a pack of cards. Lizelle kept losing partners at regular intervals.

Rajeshwari got Trisha Chetty and Dane van Niekerk; Poonam scalped wickets of Sune Luus, Andrie Steyn, Masabata Klaas and Raisibe Ntozakhe; and after Lizelle brought up her 13th ODI half-century in style, Deepti sent her back for 73. Deepti followed it up with another wicket, that of Ayabonga Khaka.

Earlier, put to bat, India Women put up a sparkling show. Smriti exploded and brought up her first century against South Africa in South Africa, the first Indian Women to achieve this feat. She also put up a record 134-run stand with Harman against South Africa. Harman and Veda took India past the 300-run mark for the second time in ODIs.

Brief scores:

India Women 302 for 3 in 50 overs (Smriti Mandhana 135, Harmanpreet Kaur 55*, Veda Krishnamurthy 51*; Sune Luus 1 for 31) beat South Africa Women 124 in 30.5 overs (Lizelle Lee 73*; Poonam Yadav 4 for 24) by 178 runs.
