When Jemimah Rodrigues took an out-of-the-blue catch at the boundary line, the world learnt about the level of cricket India Women are playing today. After the conclusion of the T20I series, Jemimah as well as her parents credited India’s fielding coach Biju George for his efforts. He used to practice boundary line catches with the girls every day, despite the girls having swollen hands or were injured.

Harmanpreet Kaur, too, was pleased with the fielding standards  of India Women and had said post match, “Our fielding, in which over the last two-three years we were lacking, has improved and that was the biggest take away from the tour.”

However, George has his favourites when it comes to fielding – Veda Krishnamurthy  and Deepti Sharma. Veda had taken stunning catches during the 2017 World Cup, one was taken when was called as a substitute in the first match against England.

Lauding the fielding of India Women during the South Africa tour, George expressed satisfaction over India’s progress and explained his practice sessions with the girls in more detail with The Times of India (TOI):

From 2017 World Cup to present: “The improvement, I would say, is more than 100%. The players are spending one hour of every training session on fielding. Naturally, the differences are there to see.”

George rates Veda and Deepti Sharma as top fielders: “Veda Krishnamurthy is the most natural fielder and Deepti Sharma is the best when it comes to throwing.”

George explains the importance of coaching: “Globally, including men’s cricket, on average 1.1 catches are being dropped per game. But if you look at the ODI and T20 series against South Africa, in seven completed matches, we dropped only five. So we have managed to stay way below the global mark for one full series.”

George also heaped praise on seniors and head coach: “Even after a long journey, the players never miss their training and it is seniors like Mithali Raj and Jhulan Goswami who show the way with their work ethic. The professionalism of head coach Tushar Arothe also guides them.
