Put in to bat at Holkar Stadium, Indore, Kings XI Punjab (KXIP) managed 174 for 6 against Mumbai Indians (MI) in Match 33 of Indian Premier League (IPL) 2018. Apart from KL Rahul, Chris Gayle, Karun Nair and Marcus Stoinis, no other Punjab batsmen looked in good nick. On a not-too-easy wicket, Mumbai bowlers led by Jasprit Bumrah and Mayank Markande did well to stifle KXIP’s batsmen.

Rahul and Gayle were once again off to a rollicking start. Rahul, in particular, started smashing bowlers all around the ground from ball one. Gayle soon got into his act as well, and smacked his first six of the night out of the stadium. He also became the first player to hit 600 boundaries in IPL. They added 50 in 37 balls before Markande came on and got rid of Rahul, who mistimed a pull off a rank long-hop, in his first over for a 20-ball 24.

Yuvraj Singh was promoted to No. 3. At the other end, Gayle recorded his 24th IPL fifty, in 38 deliveries. He then tried to launch Ben Cutting over mid-wicket and perishing for a 40-ball 50. Yuvraj made a run-a-ball 14 before getting run out at the non-striker’s end.

Akshar Patel came out ahead of Mayank Agarwal and Marcus Stoinis. Karun Nair and Akshar added 36 for the fourth wicket, Nair looking ominous with every stroke he played. Then Mitchell McClenaghan came back for his second spell, and Nair’s wicket for a 12-ball 23. Nair miscued a shot to wide long-off.

Bumrah, a champion of bowling at the death, then claimed Akshar. Trying to clear long-off, Akshar gave Hardik Pandya a simple catch, his second of the night.

Agarwal got 11 before Hardik picked his wicket in the final over of the innings. However, Hardik’s over went for 22 as Marcus Stoinis went after him. Stoinis remained unbeaten on a 15-ball 29.

Mumbai Indians made one change in the match, brining in Ewin Lewis for Kieron Pollard. For KXIP, Yuvraj, Stoinis and Akshar replaced Manoj Tiwary, Aaron Finch and Barinder Sran.

Brief score:

Kings XI Punjab 174 for 6 [Chris Gayle 50(40), Marcus Stonis 29 (15); Jasprit Bumrah 4-0-19-1 ] vs Mumbai Indians.
