Match 36 of VIVO IPL 2018 saw Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) edge past Delhi Daredevils (DD) with a single ball to spare. In pursuit of 168, SRH openers had laid the foundation before the finishing touch was provided by skipper Kane Williamson (32*) and Yusuf Pathan (27*). Williamson’s rich vein of form ensured SRH their seventh victory and pushed them to top spot, ahead of Chennai Super Kings (CSK). CSK had managed to topple them earlier this evening, but SRH regained that inside four hours.

Alex Hales and Shikhar Dhawan commenced the innings by handling Trent Boult cautiously. Boult hardly gave anything away in his first two overs. However, Hales and Dhawan took on inexperienced Avesh Khan to up the ante. As a result, SRH won the battle of the Powerplay overs, adding 61 runs. This is now their highest score in first 6 overs in IPL 2018.

Liam Plunkett and Dan Christian pulled things back a bit, but couldn’t take a wicket. The scenario changed with Amit Mishra’s introduction. He spun the odd delivery and took the duo by surprise. Hales was dismissed for a fine 45, while Dhawan’s stumps were rattled for 33.

Mishra made sure no easy run was given away, but SRH’s good start meant that they always had time. Williamson and Manish Pandey settled down. Ahead of the final four overs, DD’s inexperience came to the fore. Skipper Shreyas Iyer could have resorted to Boult earlier when Pandey and Williamson were new to the crease. DD’s sloppy fielding added to their woes. Rishabh Pant, in particular, was furious as the pressure mounted up, and lost his calm.

Boult’s second spell changed the script once again. In the 17th over he conceded only 7. Plunkett carried on the momentum with another tight over. With 29 required off 12, Yusuf took his chances. He had the last laugh, against Boult, in the penultimate over. Christian had 14 runs to play with in the last over, but Yusuf’s big-hitting prevailed in the end.

Delhi Daredevils 163 for 5 in 20 overs (Prithvi Shaw 65, Shreyas Iyer 44, Rishabh Pant 18, Vijay Shankar 23*; Rashid Khan 2 for 23, Siddarth Kaul 1 for 37) lost to Sunrisers Hyderabad 164 for 3 in 19.5 overs (Alex Hales 45, Shikhar Dhawan 33, Kane Williamson 27*, Yusuf Pathan 31*; Amit Mishra 2 for 19, Liam Plunkett 1 for 27) by 7 wickets with 1 ball to spare.
