Match 31 of ongoing VIVO IPL 2018 saw a complete turnaround by a struggling Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) to beat Mumbai Indians (MI) by 14 runs. With both sides languishing at the bottom prior to the contest, they were desperate for victory. Defending 168, RCB had MI under the pump at 21 for 3; later reduced to 84 for 5. Their tight death bowling, and fielding, restricted MI to 153 for 7. Earlier, Virat Kohli and Brendon McCullum gave RCB a good platform and Colin de Grandhomme (23 not out) consolidated later.

In the post-match conference, Kohli credited an entire team effort for the revamp. It was a tough wicket to play the aerial shots, and Kohli credited his batsmen for staying around. He also pointed out the hard work done by Umesh Yadav (with the early jolts), Tim Southee and Mohammed Siraj’s death bowling.

“We needed that win. Very important win. Tonight was an occasion we need that two points. We might have spoken about too many things. Take your fields. To confuse them, doesn’t help too much. Everyone bowled really well. Umesh over. Colin’s over with the bat (adding vital runs in the last over). Manan (Vohra) took the game away from them (attacking in the powerplay overs). We needed impact performance. We had good intent, results are around the corner. We should take this confidence forward.”

Lover boy, Kohli!

Kohli called the win a birthday gift to his wife, Anushka Sharma, who turned 30 on Tuesday. She was present in the stands.

“My wife (Anushka Sharma) is here and it’s her birthday and it’s a little birthday gift to her. I’m glad she could enjoy the win watching from here and it’s very special to achieve 2 points in front of her,” signed off the skipper.
