India got off to an excellent start to their tour of Australia after losing the toss and bowling first, as Bhuvneshwar Kumar struck in the first over of the match, getting Matthew Short to edge one behind to ‘keeper Wriddhiman Saha. Cricket Australia XI were 78 for three at Lunch. Skipper Ashton Turner would have been ruing his decision as he had to make his way out to face the fifth ball of the innings.

Bhuvneshwar and Mohammed Shami kept things tight early on, with the first boundary coming only in the ninth over of the innings. Shami especially was impressive, bowling an economical spell that saw him concede just six runs off his first four overs with two maidens. Varun Aaron was introduced in the 11th over, and started well.

The batsmen Turner and Ryan Carters kept the ball rolling, as both batsmen looked positive. Karn Sharma’s introduction let off some steam as Carters hit him for six off the third ball he sent down. However, Aaron soon turned the session on its head as he had Turner caught behind before cleaning up new man Nick Stevens second ball.

Kelvin Smith and Carters then put their heads down and counterattacked, hitting Karn Sharma for two fours in one over. Karn bowled four overs for 20, while Ravichandran Ashwin bowled four overs for 10. At lunch, the hosts had got to 78 for three, a score India would have been happy to concede.

Brief scores:

Cricket Australia XI 78 for 3 (Ryan Carters 30*, Ashton Turner 29; Varun Aaron 2 for 15, Bhuvneshwar Kumar 1 for 15) vs Indians.
