Chennai: May 25, 2012
A sparkling ton by Murali Vijay took Chennai Super Kings to a formidable 222 for five against Delhi Daredevils. The two sides are facing-off at Chennai in the second qualifier of the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2012.
Earlier, Delhi captain, Virender Sehwag won the toss and elected to bowl first. Surprisingly, Morne Morkel – the highest wicket-taker in IPL5 – was left out of the eleven and was replaced by Andre Russell. Sunny Gupta, an off-spinner, replaced Irfan Pathan.
Gupta, playing his first IPL game was introduced in the first over by Sehwag – a move that didn’t work as he conceded 12.
Chennai openers Murali Vijay and Michael Hussey got them off to a good start. They capitalised on the fielding restrictions and scored at a brisk rate.
Delhi got their first breakthrough in the ninth over when Varun Aaron dismissed Michael Hussey. Vijay brought up his fifty in the same over with a crisp shot through the covers for four.
Vijay continued with his belligerence as he smashed Sehwag for two fours and two sixes in the 11th over.
Suresh Raina mounted Delhi’s agony, but fell to Pawan Negi in the 14th over. That wicket brought Mahendra Singh Dhoni to the crease and he started from where he left off against Mumbai Indians in the eliminator.
Dhoni carted Gupta for two sixes in the 15th over after Vijay had hit one out of the ground. Gupta was a touch unlucky as David Warner dropped Dhoni at the long-off boundary.
The Chennai captain’s destructive knock of 23 off 10 balls came to an end when he holed out in the deep to Negi off Aaron’s bowling.
Vijay got to the three-figure mark with a double in the 17th over. He followed that up with two boundaries.
Albie Morkel was dismissed for a golden duck, but Chennai were going strong at 183 for four in 17.1 overs.
Dwayne Bravo entered the stage and supported Vijay as continued the mauling job. Aaron’s nightmarish time didn’t cease as Bravo took him for two sixes and two fours in the 19th over.
Umesh Yadav, the pick of the Delhi bowlers, bowled a decent 20th over as he conceded only seven runs. Vijay was run-out off the last ball of the innings and he ended up with 113 off 54 balls.
Brief Score: CSK 222 for 5 from 20 overs (Murali Vijay 113, Dwayne Bravo 33*, Varun Aaron 2 for 63, Umesh Yadav 1 for 27) vs DD
