Chennai: Feb 3, 2013

We have come to a close of the auction and it has been a day full of surprises. There have been a few unknown commodities who have gone for big sums and the Indian fans would have to acquaint themselves to them. Glenn Maxwell would jump with joy as he has a million dollars to his name. Ajantha Mendis too would be a happy customer today. We will be coming up with a round-up of the auction soon. Thank you for joining out coverage of the IPL auction. This is Nishad Pai Vaidya signing off. Have a good day.

04:00 hrs - Kolkata Knight Riders explain their bids for the mystery spinners. They say they would have wanted a back-up for Sunil Narine. They didn’t get Ajantha Mendis, but got Sachithra Senanayake. Again, they say that they are fairly well settled and just strenghthened their team. On being asked about Luke Pomersbach’s purchase, Shukla says that the controversies are now over.

03:59 hrs - The press-conference is starting. Rajiv Shukla is going over the details for the press. At the press conference, we have Shilpa Shetty of the Rajasthan Royals. Chennai Super Kings and Kolkata Knight Riders also have their representatives. Chennai say that they went for youngsters this time. Shukla explains that this auction wasn’t the big one and that they wanted to fill slot. We will have the big auction next year, he says. Shetty also says that they have filled in the blanks as they have a side with them. She seems happy with the buys.

03:55 hrs - The remaining players would be available in case there are some injuries etc. Here is the count of the players bought by the respective teams:
Royal Challengers Bangalore – seven.
Sunrisers Hyderabad – six.
Mumbai Indians – five.
Chennai Super Kings – five.
Pune Warriors India – four.
Rajasthan Royals – three.
Delhi Daredevils – three.
Kolkata Knight Riders – two.
Kings XI Punjab – two.

03:50 hrs - Kushal Perera goes to Rajasthan Royals for $20,000. Matt Prior is the last player on the day and he goes unsold. With this we, have come to an end of the IPL 2013 auction. Richard Madley wishes the teams the best for the tournament and there is a round of applause. A total of 37 players were bought, a total of $11.89 mllion was spent, says Sundar Raman.

03:47 hrs - Ryan McClaren bagged by Kolkata Knight Riders. Aaron Finch and John Hastings go unsold.

03:46 hrs - Adam Voges and Rory Kliendveldt find no takers. Ben Cutting comes up for $100,000. Again, no takers. Dinesh Chandimal also doesn’t find buyers in this round. Jason Holder goes to Chennai Super Kings for $20,000.

03:44 hrs - Akila Dananjaya sold to Chennai Super Kings. Clint McKay goes to the Sunrisers Hyderabad.

03:41 hrs - Rangana Herath, Matthew Wade and Josh Hazlewood go unsold. Doug Bollinger too doesn’t find takers in this round. This seems to be a very fast process. Martin Guptill is up next for $100,000. No takers for the New Zealander there.

03:39 hrs - Daniel Christian goes to Royal Challengers Bangalore for $100,000.

03:38 hrs -The next player is Ravi Bopara and he goes unsold. Quinton de Kock is up again for $20,000. Sunrisers have put in a bid for the South African youngster. de Kock bags an IPL contract with Sunrisers Hyderabad.

03:36 hrs -The first player drawn from the bag is Jacob Oram – who is up at $50,000. Mumbai Indians have put the opening bid. Oram goes to the Mumbai Indians.

03:34 hrs -We are set for the final round of the auction. The franchises have made their picks and the players would be produced at random from a bag. Richard Madley is announcing the player numbers. So, we have to wait and see who those players are. There are 22 in total.

03:26 hrs - So far, Royal Challengers have been the most active – having purchased six players. Pune Warriors, Mumbai Indians and Sunrisers Hyderabad have bought four each. Chennai Super Kings and Delhi Daredevils have bought three apiece. Rajasthan Royals and Kings XI Punjab have bagged only two, while Kolkata Knight Riders have been the least active – with one buy.

03:11 hrs - There have been a few surprises. Kane Richardson, Sachithra Senanayake and Chris Morris went for huge sums. Not many would have expected that. The news coming in is that Pune cannot buy any more players.

03:08 hrs - This round is over. However, the franchises can pick a few players from auction list and this would be their last chance, says Sundar Raman. The teams are given five minutes to pick and the auction will resume in 15 minutes. There are a few slots available. We will be back as soon as the action starts.

03:07 hrs - Chennai Super Kings and Pune Warriors in pursuit of the last player up on sale – Australia’s Kane Richardson. His price has gone over $300,000. Chennai and Pune continue and the figure marches on to $400,000. Chennai have certainly become more proactive after lunch. This is hitting the roof for Richardon – who has played a solitary One-Day International for Australia. He is sure to have more that $650,000. Pune Warriors are fighting on and they raise if to $700,000. Kane Richardson goes to Pune Warriors.

03:01 hrs – Ben Laughlin has been sold to Chennai Super Kings for $20,000

03:00 hrs - Jason Holder and Rory Kliendveldt go unsold.

02:58 hrs - Nathan Coulter-Nile comes up and Mumbai Indians and Rajasthan Royals start the bidding war. His base price was $100,000 – which has doubled now in the bidding. Nita Ambani and Shilpa Shetty are matching one another for every bid. Richard Madley is very alert to respond to the bids. The figure has now reached $400,000. Rajasthan are out. Mumbai Indians buy Nathan Coulter-Nile for $450,000.

02:54 hrs - Jacob Oram also doesn’t get a buyer. We now move to the fast-bowlers.

02:52 hrs - Surprise, suprise. Kevin O’Brien finds no takers. He would feel a bit hard done by. After all, he did give the Indian public a glimpse of what he can do with the bat.

02:49 hrs - Rilee Rossouw’s base price is $20,000. He too goes unsold. Chris Barnwell is now up for $50,000. Royal Challengers Bangalore have placed the opening bid for him. They are successful in getting him. Barnwell goes to Bangalore for $50,000.

02:49 hrs - Travis Birt, the Aussie batsman is also unsold. No bids for him. Henry Davids, the South African batsman doesn’t get any bids. Ben Rohrer also has the same fate.

02:46 hrs - Ben Cutting is up for $100,000. None of the teams are interested. Josh Hazlewood, Clint McKay are also unsold for a similar figure.

02:43 hrs - Scott Styris is next and he goes unsold.

02:41 hrs - Sachitra Senanayake would be enjoying this as Kolkata Knight Riders and Chennai Super Kings take it over $600,000. Chennai withdraw and Kolkata bag Senanayake for $625,000. This is their first purchase of the day.

02:40 hrs - Sachitra Senanayake is up and Chenna Super Kings make the first move. Mumbai Indians are also considering him as an option. Senanayake was priced at $50,000 and now that figure has gone past $200,000. The rise continues and it seems as if Mumbai and Chennai have recharged their batteries at lunch. They aren’t relenting here as the figure crosses $300,000 – with Chennai holding the bid. Out of nowhere – Kolkata Knight Riders join in with a bid of $375,000. Mumbai withdraw from the battle.

02:28 hrs - The contest for Chris Morris heats up with Royal Challengers Bangalore placing their big at $550,000. Bangalore almost won it, but Chennai hit back. This is dizzying – it has gone up to $625,000. Chennai Super Kings are the ultimate victors as they bag Chris Morris for $625,000.

02:28 hrs - Chris Morris is up now and we have the first intense contest of the second session. Mumbai Indians and Chennai Super Kings are certainly considering him seriously. His price has gone over $100,000. Sunrisers withdrew after an early bid. It is now over $300,000 with Chennai and Mumbai continuing their charge. Morris is having a field day as his stakes have gone over $500,000. Who would have thought?

02:27 hrs - The auction has started again and the Sri Lankan all-rounders are up first. Farveez Maharoof goes unsold. Jeevan Mendis has been sold to the Delhi Daredevils for $50,000. He played for the Sydney Sixers in the Big Bash League.

02:25 hrs – Some of the players who have been picked include – Scott Styris, Farveez Maharoof, Sachitra Senanayke, Clint McKay, Ben Cutting, Jeevan Mendis, Henry Davids, Ben Rhorer, Rilee Rossouw, Kevin O’Brien, Jacob Oram, Jason Holder, Rory Kliendveldt, Ben Laughlin, Kane Richardson, Nathan Coulter-Nile, Travis Birt and Christopher Barnwell.

02:21 hrs - We are set to start after the lunch break. The teams are ready, Richard Madley is on the dias. The franchises have picked around 20 players and they would be up for auction.

01:25 hrs - The press conference is on and Royal Challengers Bangalore explain why they bought so many fast-bowlers. They say that they wanted to boost their Indian fast-bowling resources. With Chris Gayle and Ab de Villiers – two foreigners in the batting and that pushed them to go for more Indian fast-bowlers. Rajiv Shukla says that off the remaining players, they aren’t going to go through each one. The franchises have been asked to mark the players they are interested in.

We will be back right after the lunch break.

01:10 hrs - Sundar Raman reads out the foreign players slots remaining in the teams. Here are the vacant foreign player slots in the various teams: Delhi and Pune have one. Kolkata, Mumbai, Rajasthan and Sunrisers have two. Bangalore and Punjab have three. Chennai have four.

01:06 hrs - Paul Harris goes unsold. Mendis’ fellow Sri Lankans Akila Dananjaya and Rangana Herath don’t get a team. Sulieman Benn gets no bids. Aaron Phangiso – who impressed during the Champions League T20 last year is also unsold. If you wanted a bowler with great control – he was the man. Time for lunch now.

01:04 hrs - Ajantha Mendis is in and this should be interesting. Mumbai Indians put their hands up and Pune Warrios soon follow. They certainly want his bag of tricks. The mark has gone over $400,000. Mendis’ old side Kolkata Knight Riders have joined now. Knight Riders and Pune take it over $700,000. The mystery still works in T20 doesn’t it?

Pune Warriors India buy Ajantha Mendis for $725,000,

12:58 hrs - Steven O’Keefe and Devendra Bishoo haven’t been picked.

12:56 hrs - The spinners are on now. Cameron Boyce of Australia, Veerasammy Permaul and Suraj Randiv go unsold. Nathan McCullum is the first spinner who has attracted a bid – with Sunrisers bidding at the opening price. Sunrisers bag Nathan McCullum for $100,000.

12:50 hrs - Doug Bollinger didn’t find any takers, but will Dirk Nannes go down the same road. Well, Bollinger’s old side Chennai Super Kings set the ball rolling for Nannes. Pune Warriors come in to raise the price. This is a very fast round of bidding – almost like the one for Thisara Perera. Dirk Nannes has been bought for $600,000 by the Chennai Super Kings. That was the last fast-bowler in this list.

12:50 hrs - Doug Bollinger – who was Chennai Super Kings’s trump card finds no interest. Who would have thought this would happen. Sudeep Tyagi – another Indian fast-bowler is up – but he too goes unsold. There is some confusion there. Sunrisers have actually placed a bid for Tyagi. Richard Madley goes back to him at a $100,000. Sudeep Tyagi has been bought by the Sunrisers.

12:47 hrs - Fidel Edwards almost went unsold there. Suddenly, there is a flury of bid with Sunrisers and Rajasthan Royals competing for him. His price has now gone up to $210,000. Edwards goes to Rajasthan Royals for that price.

12:44 hrs - Manpreet Gony, who made an impression in the first season of the IPL is up. Kings XI Punjab open the bidding followed by Sunrisers Hyderabad. The race was going smooth between the two and just when you felt Bangalore had enough – they throw their hat in. Gony’s price has gone over $500,000. Kings XI Punjab get Manpreet Gony for $500,000.

12:42 hrs - Ravi Rampaul started off at $50,000. His price is now approaching $300,000 with Mumbai and Bangalore not willing to give up. Bangalore get Rampaul for $290,000. Another fast-bowler in the kitty.

12:40 hrs - A luckless scenario for Vernon Philander. He doesn’t find buyers again. One of the best bowlers in the world goes unsold – this auction can really throw surprises. Meanwhile Ravi Rampaul is being pursued by Mumbai Indians and Royal Challengers Bangalore. How many fast-bowlers are Bangalore going to buy?

12:37 hrs - Another Indian fast-bowler is up- Pankaj Singh. Delhi and Bangalore do want to strengthen their Indian fast-bowling resources. They are in this race as well. Bangalore buy another Indian fast-bowler. Pankaj Singh goes for $150,000.

12:34 hrs - The youngster Jaidev Unadkat is up and his base price is $100,000. Delhi Daredevils raise their hands for the Saurashtra lad. Rajasthan Royals come in and there resumes another tussle. Unadkat’s price has now gone above $200,000. At $250,000, Royal Challengers Bangalore throw their hat in. The price just keeps going up. Bangalore and Delhi are competing for this left-armer. Indian players do find good bids here and it is quite obvious. Bangalore bag Unadkat for $525,000.

12:29 hrs - The auction resumes and the fast-bowlers are going to be sold now. Ryan McLaren is up first. It is surprising that he has been classified as a fast-bowler. He can bat well too. A good utility player for the format. But, the franchises are not interested.

12:23 hrs - In case you did not realise – Harbhajan Singh and Ricky Ponting would be on the same team. Well, we have been robbed off a good contest there between the master and his nemesis. They have had memorable battles in the past and this time they have to join forces. How will that go?

12:22 hrs - TA Sekar from the Delhi Daredevils is delighted with Johan Botha. They wanted an off-spinning all-rounder and has also captained South Africa, Sekar says. The press conference has come to a close with that.

12:19 hrs - The press conference is going on. The first question is to Mumbai Indians’ owner Nita Ambani who explains why they picked Glenn Maxwell for a million dollars. She says he can bat well, bowls off-spin and is a fantastic fielder. Mrs.Ambani is happy to have both Ricky Ponting and Sachin Tendulkar in her team. Gosh, would you want to bowl to them when they are batting together?

12:12 hrs - The cheerful West Indian captain Darren Sammy is the last all-rounder on the list. Kolkata Knight Riders make their first move at this auction. Sunrisers also come in for the West Indian. Sammy will smile even more looking at this contest between Kolkata and Hyderabad. It is now gone up to $425,000. Knight Riders concede and Sunrisers have their second buy in Darren Sammy.

With this Richard Madley declares a 15 minute break. We will start with the fast-bowlers on thee other side. It will resume at 12.25 hrs.

12:08 hrs - New Zealand’s Jese Ryder is now on sale and the Delhi Daredevils and Royal Challengers are in hot pursuit. The price has gone up to $260,000. Delhi Daredevils get Jesse Ryder for $260,000.

12:02 hrs - Richard Madley is almost breathless there. Thisara Perera is up and Chennai Super Kings and Royal Challengers Bangalore are raising the price with each passing second. Rajasthan Royals then join in. Perera is a hard-hitting all-rounder and this process is very much like his batting. Sunrisers come in with the bid at $625,000. Perera seems to be on course to beat Maxwell’s million dollar bid or is he? Sunrisers have bought their first player – Thisara Perera it is – for $675,000.

11:57 hrs – Bangalore and the Sunrisers are raising the stakes for Nayar. He surely must be enjoying this – perhaps watching in his living room in Mumbai. Pune Warriors India come in and the price is now up to $625,000. Now, the contest is between Pune Warriors and Bangalore. Pune have raised their bid to $675,000 and Richard Madley raises his hammer. Pune Warriors have bought Nayar for $675,000.

11:53 hrs - It gets interesting now as Abhishek Nayar comes in. Teams look for Indian players as that gives them depth. Immediately, Chennai Super Kings express their interest. Rajasthan Royals have been very aggressive in this auction and they also join the bid. And, we have Delhi Daredevils who join in. This clearly shows how important Indian players are at such auctions. You can have strong foreign resources, but you need strong Indian stars in your roster. The Sunrisers come in now as they need to pick players to strengthen their resources. Their bid is against the Rajasthan Royals. This should be interesting. With the bid going up to $400,000, Royal Challengers Bangalore are ineterested.

11:52 hrs - Daniel Christian who bagged a huge price two years ago goes unsold. T20 cricket is his forte and it is surprising that he didn’t find bidders.

11:50 hrs - Maxwell’s compatriot Moises Henriques is also going strong at the auction. Royal Challengers Gangalore and Rajasthan Royals fought hard for it. Finally, Bangalore buy him for $300,000.

11:43 hrs - Glen Maxwell is in and it was obvious that he would find franchises vying for him. Mumbai Indians and Sunrisers Hyderbabad are involved in the race. Mumbai bag Glenn Maxwell for $1 Million.

11:38 hrs - The all-rounders are up now. These are the kind of utility players the franchises are looking for. Ravi Bopara goes unsold. James Faulkner from Australia is up and he finds bidders in Chennai Super Kings and Rajasthan Royals. Faulkner goes to Rajasthan Royals for $400,000.

11:35 hrs - The young Quinton de Kock also hasn’t been picked. Denesh Ramdhin is up now. The franchises don’t seem to be interested in wicket-keepers. Ramdhin, Dinesh Chandimal and Dane Vilas haven’t attracted bids. No wicket-keepers have been bought at this auction.

11:34 hrs - The next category is the Wicket-Keepers. First up, we have Matthew Wade and he goes unsold. Tim Paine is next on auction and he doesn’t find takers. England’s Matt Prior is next and he too goes unsold. Sri Lankan stumpers Kushal Perera, Kaushal Silva and Prasanna Jayawardene find no bidders.

11:28 hrs - Adam Voges from Australia hasn’t been bought by anybody. Phillip Hughes is the last player in this category. Mumbai Indians bid for Hughes. Hughes has been bought by Mumbai for $100,000.

11:23 hrs - Luke Pomersbach, who had a forgettable stint in India last year garners a lot of interest from Kings XI Punjab and Mumbai Indians. There is an intense race between them for him. He played for  the Kings XI in the past. His price goes up to $300,000. Kings XI Punjab have bought Luke Pomersbach for $300,000.

11:18 hrs - The Marquee players have been covered and all have been sold. Aaron Finch is the first player from the next category. Upul Tharanga, Martin Guptill and Darren Bravo follow. They have been unsold. Herschelle Gibbs finds no takers.

11:18 hrs – Michael Clarke, the Australia captain is now up for auction. His base price is $400,000. Pune Warrios have placed their bid. Remember, he played for them in IPL season five. Clarke has been bought by the Pune Warriors India for $400,000.

11:13 hrs - Johan Botha is the next player on sale. Delhi Daredevils bid for him at $300,000. Pune Warriors join the race. The bidding went up to $450,000. Botha has been sold to the Delhi Daredevils for that price.

11:05 hrs - RP Singh is the next player. There is a competition between Rajasthan Royals, Royal Challengers Bangalore and the Chennai Super Kings. Chennai seem to have dropped their challenge, while the other two continue. An intense contest between Rajasthan and Bangalore ensuing for the Indian pacer. Raising the stakes by the minute. The Sunrisers Hyderabad join the race – their first taste of the action. Bangalore are still in the race though. Sunrisers have called it quit and RP Singh has been sold to Bangalore for $400,000.

11:02 hrs – Ricky Ponting is the first player on sale. He remains unsold. No wait! The Mumbai Indians have bid at $400,000. Mumbai Indians bag Ricky Ponting.

11:01 hrs - Richard Madley comes on the dias and declares the commencement of the IPL auction. The first section is the Marquee Players.

11:00 hrs - Sundar Raman, the CEO of the IPL announces the start of the auction and welcomes the new team – Sunrisers Hyderabad. He is going over a few rules and the invites Rajiv Shukla to address the gathering. Shukla declares their ambition of making IPL season six bigger and better than the previous editions.

The owners are gearing up for the challenge. It is certainly a challenge as the bidding process can get very competetive. Raj Kundra, the owner of the Rajasthan Royals has just tweeted, “Time for #IPL6 player auction in Chennai @rajasthanroyals @TheShilpaShetty let the action begin!”

Hello and welcome to CricketCountry’s live coverage of the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2013 auction. I, Nishad Pai Vaidya will take you through the events of the day at Chennai. In one hour, Richard Madley, the auctioneer will announce the start of the auction and the franchises will place their bids. A total of 108 players will go under the hammer – seven have been added to the original list of 101.

Ricky Ponting and Michael Clarke are undoubtedly the star attractions, while Rudra Pratap Singh will be the big Indian player in the list. Abhishek Nayar would be the other Indian player who would hope for a good deal. A number of young South African and Australian youngsters also feature on the list.

Let the action begin….
