Mumbai Indians have won their first IPL title. The players are ecstatic. Mumbai got important wickets first up and that pegged back Chennai considerably. Lasith Malinga had a brilliant start when he picked up two wickets off the first over. Badrinath was out in the next over. Chennai kept losing wickets. MS Dhoni came at No 7 his unbeaten 63 was not enough for Chennai.
Sachin Tendulkar: This is my last IPL. He said this has been the best IPL season for us. IPL 2011 was the best before this.
He also said that he was being realistic as he announced his retirement.
Never before has any side chased 42 off the final over. Dhoni hits a couple of sixes in the final over. The first one was slapped over square-leg and the next one was slapped over bowler’s head. The last ball has been hit for a boundary wide off long-on. Mumbai win IPL 2013 by 23 runs.
Dhoni starts the over with a four over Malinga’s head. The second ball was hit towards sweeper cover and no single was taken. Malinga beats Dhoni twice where the yorker length delivery was missed by captain cool. Chennai need 42 off the final over.
Pollard is taking the pace away from the ball. Ashwin takes single off the first delivery. Dhoni has taken a single off the second delivery. Off the fourth ball Ashwin chips it straight to substitute Akshar Patel at mid-wicket. Mohit leaves the first ball that he faces. It is all upto Dhoni now. Chennai need 50 off two overs.
Johnson comes into bowl his fourth over who is varying his pace. The second delivery was a big wide and Johnson was lucky to get away with it. Only four runs have come off the 17th over. Chennai need 52 off 18 deliveries.
Pollard comes into the attack. Dhoni takes a single off the first ball when he punches Pollard down the ground. Ashwin takes a single off the second ball. Dhoni hits the fourth ball straight down the ground for a six. Chennai need 56 off four overs.
Ojha gives ball some air and Dhoni smashes it over long-on for a six. He is taking on the left-arm spinner. Dhoni deliberately denies a single off the third ball. The fourth ball has been hit through the covers for two runs. Ten have come off the 15th over.
Lasith Malinga comes back for his second spell. The first ball has been flicked towards square-leg off the backfoot for a boundary. Ashwin is doing the sensible thing by rotating the strike. Malinga gives six runs in his comeback over.
Ojha has been his over the top of long-on for a six by Dhoni. He is opening his shoulders. Dhoni still has the ability to win the game for Chennai. He needs support. Ojha goes for eight runs in his third over.
Harbhajan starts his third over and gets Chris Morris. Chennai are losing wickets regularly. It was a doosra which Morris tries to slog-sweep but gets an edge which is caught by Dinesh Karthik. Harbhajan gives two off his third over and picked up his second wicket.
Dhoni cuts the second ball just in front of point for a couple of runs. He is looking for ones and twos. Ojha fires the first ball to Morkel on his pads. He paddles it in the hands of short fine-leg for no run. Ojha fires the last ball of the over which turns to be a yorker. Morkel falls for 10 off 10. Chennai are losing the plot.
Kieron Pollard comes into the attack. Chennai are looking for singles. Dhoni is looking to unsettle Pollard by dancing down the track. The bowler got put off by the charge and fires it wide down the leg-side. Four have come off Pollard’s first over.
Harbhajan is bowling a lot slower. He is giving a generous dose of flight. Morkel goes for a big hit which eludes Kieron Pollard at long-off. There is a sense of urgency in the way Chennai are running. Nine runs have come off Harbhajan’s second over.
Rohit has got Mitchell Johnson into the attack. The idea here is to pick up a quick wicket which willpeg back Chennai considerably. The sixth wicket falls and Chennai are reeling. Vijay goes for a pull shot which catches him off-guard. Mumbai are right on top in the IPL 2013 final.
Harbhajan Singh comes onto bowl. He is bowling a lot slower. Jadeja goes for a lofted shot off the second ball of his innings. That proves to be a meek loft which goes straight into the hands of Kieron Pollard at long-off. Mumbai Indians have got five wickets inside seven overs. Finally MS Dhoni comes in to bat.
Bravo welcomes Rishi Dhawan by carting him over mid-off for a boundary off the very first delivery. The fourth delivery found the edge off Vijay’s bat but it was floored by Karthik. Will that prove to be costly. The final ball was a slower ball to Bravo who plays the ball a touch early and it spoons to mid-on. Mumbai have got four wickets in Powerplay overs.
Pragyan Ojha comes into the attack. He is welcomed with a boundary off the first ball by Bravo over mid-on. He is looking to be positive. Chennai is on the lookout for big shots. The fourth ball falls just short of extra-cover. Bravo tried to go past Rohit but the ball stopped. Seven have come off Ojha’s first over.
Johnson is looking to swing the ball back into the right hander. In pursuit of that delivery Johnson is bowling a tough wider of the off-stump. Vijay carts the bowler for a couple past point and a boundary through the covers. The final ball was on the pads which was glided past fine-leg for a boundary. Chennai are consolidating.
Lasith Malinga starts his second over. He has pushed Bravo on the backfoot. He is using the bouncer as a surprise element and it is clocking more than 140 kmph. A slower short delivery was pulled awkwardly by Bravo over square-leg. Chennai get their first boundary off the innings. Seven runs have come off Malinga’s second over.
Mitchell Johnson comes into the attack. He has his tail up. Subramaniam Badrinath falls after playing away from the body. They are reeling at 3/3. Is the pressure getting onto Chennai Super Kings? Badrinath tried to hit Johnson through the covers but he gets a regulation edge which is caught by ‘keeper Dinesh Karthik. In walks Dwayne Bravo at No 5. Chennai will need partnerships in the big final. Mumbai have got three quick wickets.
Lasith Malinga starts the proceeding for Mumbai. The first ball is an inswinger to Michael Hussey who hits a cover drive and runs with the shot. The throw came in from mid-off and just missed the stumps. Vijay hits the ball towards mid-wicket and runs a risky run. Hussey has been bowled off the fourth ball. A big wicket for Mumbai at the start. And off the fifth ball Suresh Raina has been bounced out. He is caught at an awkward position and is caught at sqaure-leg. In walks Badrinath in the first over who gets an outswinger first up and he gets a leading edge which is fielded by the second slip.
Kieron Pollard’s 32-ball 60 has helped Mumbai score 148 in the final. Will the score be enough? Mumbai have put a score on the board. Chennai need to score the runs at 7.45 runs per over. Harbhajan digs out Bravo’s yorker past Dhoni for a boundary. The ball goes fine. The third ball was an inside edge past Dhoni who is kept busy as the ball flies nearby him. The fourth ball was a yorker length which was steered past backward point by Harbhajan. The fifth ball was hit too well towards sweeper cover. The last ball was hit straight by Pollard for a boundary. Seventeen have come off the 18th over.
Pollard is hoodwinked by Chris Morris’ slower ball. Pollard throws the kitchen sink and the bat goes in the air and one run is scored. Harbhajan is welcomed by a short delivery. The fourth ball was a full delivery which Harbhajan hits towards covers for a single. The fifth ball was a short ball which was not high enough. Pollard hits it for a four past square-leg. Six have come off Morris’ third over.
Ambati Rayudu falls after strategic time-out. He charges Bravo off the first after the break and misses the ball. Pollard hits the third ball straight and the ball races away to the boundary. Six have come off Bravo’s second over and a big wicket of Rayudu.
Jadeja is bowling a tad wider to Pollard. The first ball was hit towards covers for a boundary. Murali Vijay fails to field the ball running from sweeper cover. The third ball was swept from Pollard from outside off which eluded long-on. Ten runs have come off the 15th over. Mumbai are getting a move-on.
Dwayne Bravo comes into the attack. He will probably be bowling right through. Rayudu hits the ball a little fine towards third-man and gets a single. Pollard hits the second ball towards backward point for a couple. Hussey desparately dives and prevents a boundary. Six runs have come off Bravo’s first over.
Ashwin starts his third over. He starts with a wide. The next three deliveries are milked for singles. Ashwin bowls a couple of dot balls to Pollard. The last ball has been hit over long-on by Pollard. He is looking ominous. Ten runs have come off Ashwin’s over.
Ravindra Jadeja comes on to bowl. The second delivery to Pollard finds the edge but it eludes the first slip and goes for a boundary. Mumbai are scoring runs in singles. They are playing the spinners well scoring ones and twos. Nine runs have come off Jadeja’s first over.
Ashwin starts his second over. The first ball is a short delivery which is cut towards sweeper cover for a single from Rayudu. Pollard hits the second ball for a single down the ground. The fourth ball has been hit inside-out from Rayudu for a boundary. Seven have come off Ashwin’s over.
Morris comes to bowl his second over. The first delivery was a full delivery which was hit towards covers for no run by Rayudu. The second delivery was a short delivery which was cut to backward point for a single as Jadeja fields the ball. Karthik is dismissed off the third delivery. It was an inside-edge where Karthik fails to get his bat and pad together. The ball cartwheels onto his stumps. Kieron Pollard comes at No 6. The first ball is an off-drive which goes for a four. Ravichandran Ashwin comes into the attack. He concedes five runs off his first over. There is some slow turn for him. Ashwin bowled a carrom ball which was quick and it beat Rayudu. But Mumbai have got five singles. It has been a decent recovery after the fall of three quick wickets.
Rayudu hits Chris Morris for a wonderfully timed backfoot punch which goes behind point for two runs. The second ball was a short delivery which was a good comeback from Morris. The third delivery was a full delivery which Rayudu hits it to sweeper cover for a single. The last ball is a qucik single but the ball deflects off the stump microphone and an extra run results. Morris concedes five off his first over.
Mohit balls his final over. The first ball was a short delivery to Karthik which was pulled for a single towards deep mid-wicket. The third ball was an attempted cut by Rayudu which does fine for a boundary. The third-man was placed square. The fifth delivery was a decent back of the length delivery which was fielded by Mohit but he unnecessarily has a shy at the stumps that results in an overthrow. Six runs come off Mohit’s final over. He finishes with one for 26 off four overs.
Rayudu breaks free with a straight hit off Morkel for a boundary. The fifth ball was a tad short which was worked towards mid-wicket off the backfoot by Rayudu. The outfield is fast. Every time Mumbai are beating the outfield the ball is racing away. Nine runs have come off the last Powerplay over.
Karthik punches the first ball of the over through extra-covers for a boundary. Murali Vijay misfields but the shot was times wonderfully. Karthik tries to work Mohit towards square-leg but gets an outside edge that flies to third-man for a single. Karthik is getting frustrated with Dhoni standing up. The last ball was cut ferociously but backward point gets his hand on the ball and prevents a boundary. Only one run results. Seven have come off Mohit’s third over.
Rohit Sharma falls for only two. He tries to play on the up off Morkel but the ball stops on the wicket. Rohit checks his shot and falls. Mumbai are reeling in the final. Only two runs have come off the over and a big wicket of Rohit has come in this over.
Mohit is getting a lot of inward movement. Dhoni is standing up to prevent Karthik from making the pre-determined forward movement. Mohit’s inswingers are catching Karthik on the crease. An odd delivery moves away. The final delivery was another away going delivery which was a tad short. Karthik hits on the up through covers for his first boundary.
Aditya Tare falls off the first ball. He tries to work Albie Morkel’s full ball towards mid-wicket but fails to connect. Mumbai lose openers in seven balls. Rohit Sharma is in the middle. Chennai have made a good start in the final. Only three runs have come off the second over.
Mohit Sharma starts the first over bowling to Dwayne Smith. The first ball is on the stumps worked away to mid-wicket for no run. The second ball was driven to covers. The third ball was hit on the up between backward point and covers. Mohit bowls a back of a length delivery to Smith who misses the ball. He is out leg-before. He goes for four. Dinesh Karthik hits the last ball between ‘keeper Dhoni who was standing up and the slip. This is an excellent first over from Mohit.
