Chennai: Apr 15, 2013
An easy victory in the end for the Pune Warriors, their second in five games. Chennai Super Kings were still in the contest until MS Dhoni was at the crease, but Chennai were undone by regular loss of wickets.
That’s it from me, Jaideep Vaidya, at CricketCountry. Join us again tomorrow for more IPL action, where we have a double header — Kings XI Punjab vs Kolkata Knight Riders followed by Royal Challengers Bangalore vs Delhi Daredevils. Good night!
CSK 135/8 | Overs 20 | Morris 5*, Ashwin 11*
Albie Morkel goes for the big one over long off but finds Aaron Finch on the rope. All over for Chennai even as Ravi Ashwin manages to get two boundaries. Pune get a much-needed second win of the tournament via what can only be described as a shock win over the powerful CSK.
CSK 124/7 | Overs 19 | A Morkel 13*, Morris 5*
Unless Albie Morkel can hit six sixes in the last over, Pune have won this match. It’s been an inspired performance from the visitors with both bat and ball and thouroughly deserve the win.
Chennai need 36 off 6 balls.
CSK 118/7 | Overs 18 | A Morkel 9*, Morris 3* OUT!
MS Dhoni hits Ashok Dinda hard and flat towards long off where Steven Smith budges in and takes a good catch. He has the safest pair of hands in the Pune team and wasn’t going to drop that. Chennai can get just four runs from the over and Pune are all but home now.
Chennai need 42 off 12 balls @ 21.00.
CSK 114/6 | Overs 17 | Dhoni 10*, A Morkel 8*
Albie Morkel gets things started by hoisting Mitchell Marsh up, up and over long on for six. Four other singles come off the over. Chennai need more aggression. One 20-run over and we are back on par.
Chennai need 46 off 18 balls @ 15.33.
CSK 104/6 | Overs 16 | Dhoni 8*, A Morkel 0* OUT!
Dwayne Bravo tries to clear the long off fence, but does not find the middle of the bat, instead finding Steven Smith. The second Strategic Timeout is taken as the new batsman, Albie Morkel, comes in. All over for Chennai, or not? MSD is still at the crease. Albie is no mug with the bat either. Remember the 28-run over against RCB last year? CSK could use one now.
Chennai need 56 off 24 balls @ 14.00.
CSK 99/5 | Overs 15 | Dhoni 4*, Bravo 0* OUT!
Mitchell Marsh gets another wicket and it’s that of the miracle man
Sir Ravindra Jadeja. The left-hander flicks Marsh off his hips straight to Ashok Dinda at short fine leg. Dwayne Bravo is the new man in; this is Chennai’s last recognised batting pair, who need to score at more than two a ball now.
Chennai need 61 off 30 balls @ 12.20.
CSK 95/4 | Overs 14 | Jadeja 26*, Dhoni 2*
Ravindra Jadeja swats Rahul Sharma into the sightscreen for six as CSK get nine off the over. The required run-rate however continues to crawl upwards.
Chennai need 65 off 36 balls @ 10.83.
CSK 86/4 | Overs 13 | Jadeja 19*, Dhoni 0* OUT!
Ravindra Jadeja does well to spot Mitch Marsh’s slower one and smacks it over mid-wicket for four. However, S Badrinath fails to emulate his partner as he holes out to Steven Smith at long on off another slower delivery. MS Dhoni, perhaps Chennai’s last shot, walks in.
Chennai need 74 off 42 balls @ 10.57.
CSK 78/3 | Overs 12 | Badrinath 33*, Jadeja 12*
Rahul Sharma gives away just four runs and the equation for Chennai is getting tedious by the minute. They need at least a boundary an over from here, if not two.
Chennai need 82 off 48 balls @ 10.25.
CSK 74/3 | Overs 11 | Badrinath 29*, Jadeja 10*
S Badrinath places Abhishek Nayar between deep mid-wicket and long on for a second time and gets four. Eleven runs come off the over and Chennai need many more of these.
Chennai need 86 off 54 balls @ 9.56.
CSK 63/3 | Overs 10 | Badrinath 24*, Jadeja 6*
Rahul Sharma finally comes into the attack and Chennai milk six runs from the over. They need 97 runs from the next 10 overs.
CSK 57/3 | Overs 9 | Badrinath 21*, Jadeja 3*
Abhishek Nayar gets in a tidy over, giving just three runs as Pune build the pressure on Chennai. Rahul Sharma hasn’t got a bowl so far. Time for the first Strategic Timeout of the innings. Chennai need to do some brainstorming.
CSK 54/3 | Overs 8 | Badrinath 19*, Jadeja 2*
S Badrinath makes use of a short-pitched ball from Steven Smith and pulls it to the gap between deep mid-wicket and long on to get four runs. Six more come off the over.
CSK 44/3 | Overs 7 | Badrinath 12*, Jadeja 0* OUT!
Murali Vijay skies Abhishek Nayar and the ball falls down the throat of Ross Taylor to give Pune their third wicket. Needless desperation from the Chennai batsman, after Nayar gave just two runs in the first four balls. S Badrinath gets a boundary off the last ball.
CSK 38/2 | Overs 6 | Vijay 22*, Badrinath 7*
Subramanium Badrinath flicks Mitchell Marsh down fine leg for four, before Murali Vijay spanks the Australian over long on for maximum. Some pressure released there for Chennai.
CSK 25/2 | Overs 5 | Vijay 14*, Badrinath 2* OUT!
Bhuvneshwar Kumar comes in for a third over and the decision bears fruit as Suresh Raina holes out to mid on. The left-handed batsman tried to lift the bowler over T Suman, but didn’t time the shot properly. It was an easy catch in the end. Pune on top here.
CSK 22/1 | Overs 4 | Vijay 13*, Raina 8*
Murali Vijay hits Ashok Dinda for two consecutive boundaries down the leg side. Finally, a good over for the home side. Twelve runs come off it.
CSK 10/1 | Overs 3 | Vijay 3*, Raina 6*
Bhuvneshwar Kumar gets another superb over in, conceding just three runs. This is just the start Pune would have wanted! There is no Michael Hussey to save Chennai today.
CSK 7/1 | Overs 2 | Vijay 2*, Raina 5*
Ashok Dinda gets a neat over in, save for the final ball which is pulled to the deep mid-wicket fence by Suresh Raina. Murali Vijay was dropped at mid on as well.
CSK 0/1 | Overs 1 | Vijay 0*, Raina 0* OUT!
Bhuvneshwar Kumar dismisses Srikkanth Anirudha on the second ball of the innings! Bhuvi swings the ball a mile in and raps Anirudha on the back leg, and the umpires raises a slow finger. Great start for Pune — a wicket maiden!
Pune Warriors India have posted a competitive 159 for five against the Chennai Super Kings in their Indian Premier League (IPL) match at the MA Chidambaram Stadium.
PWI 159/5 | Overs 20 | Smith 39*, Nayar 0* OUT!
Steven Smith reverse-lifts Dwayne Bravo for six way over the third man fence! Where and more importantly WHY have Pune been hiding this guy?! Manish Pandey then slaps Bravo’s short and wide delivery to the extra cover fence, before being bowled. Twelve runs come from the over as Pune just miss out on 160 by a run. It’s a good total, but Pune perhaps would have preferred at least 10 more given the start Aaron Finch provided. Steven Smith remains unbeaten on 39 which came off just 16 balls, including three fours and as many sixes.
Two Australians have done the job for Pune in the first innings. Join us in a bit for the chase.
PWI 147/4 | Overs 19 | Smith 32*, Pandey 5*
Steven Smith gets a much-needed maximum for Pune with a cheeky swipe over deep backward square-leg. Dirk Nannes wants to get smacked more and bowls short and wide to Smith, who reaches out and slices it over point for four. Sixteen valuable runs come off the over; 160 is back on!
PWI 131/4 | Overs 18 | Smith 19*, Pandey 2* OUT!
Mitchell Marsh tries to clear deep backward point with a slash but Albie Morkel is there to intervene and takes the catch. Dwayne Bravo gets an excellent over in at the death, giving away just three runs apart from getting rid of the big-hitting Marsh. 160 looks difficult now for the Warriors.
PWI 128/3 | Overs 17 | Smith 18*, M Marsh 2* OUT!
Chris Morris gets another wicket as Ross Taylor holes out to Ravindra Jadeja at long on. Steven Smith shows his captain how it’s done as he coolly drives Morris over the rope and into the stands on the last ball of the over. Morris finishes with figures of 4-0-25-2.
PWI 118/2 | Overs 16 | Taylor 8*, Smith 11*
Steven Smith gets a lucky boundary off Dwayne Bravo through to the third man via a thick edge fence before earning one with a sweet pull that beats fine leg. Good over for Pune; 12 runs are scored off it after getting just 22 in the four preceding it. Time for Strategic Timeout No 2.
PWI 106/2 | Overs 15 | Taylor 6*, Smith 2* OUT!
Robin Uthappa throws his wicket away with a loose lofted shot off the bowling of Chris Morris over mid on that easily carries to Ravindra Jadeja at long on. Uthappa falls for 26. He really needs to convert these 20s and 30s into bigger ones. Another good over for Chennai with just five coming off it. Steven Smith is the new man in at No 4.
PWI 101/1 | Overs 14 | Uthappa 26*, Taylor 3*
Ravi Ashwin finishes his spell with a tidy over, conceding just four runs. Robin Uthappa and Ross Taylor need to take advantage of the impetus provided by Aaron Finch if Pune are to get past 160.
PWI 97/1 | Overs 13 | Uthappa 24*, Taylor 1* OUT!
Aaron Finch swats Ravindra Jadeja over deep midwicket for six before being stumped. The Australian steps down and tries to work Jadeja’s short-pitched delivery down the leg side, but completely misses the ball as MS Dhoni completes an easy stumping. Finch goes for a superb 67 off 45 balls. Can CSK come back into the match? Captain Ross Taylor is the new man in.
PWI 89/0 | Overs 12 | Uthappa 23*, Finch 61*
A rather quiet over seeing as how things have gone so far for Pune. Ravi Ashwin gives away just four singles and a leg bye.
PWI 84/0 | Overs 11 | Uthappa 21*, Finch 60*
Aaron Finch almost barges into the leg umpire as he gives himself room against Chris Morris before slashing him to the extra cover fence. What’s he gonna do next?!
PWI 78/0 | Overs 10 | Uthappa 21*, Finch 55*
Dwayne Bravo comes into the attack and loosens himself with…well…a loosener. The Trinidadian bowls short and wide to Robin Uthappa, who easily manages to clear point and deep point with a cut for four. Pune get four more singles in to make it 78 for no loss at the halfway point.
PWI 70/0 | Overs 9 | Uthappa 15*, Finch 53*
Aaron Finch brings up his half-century off just 32 balls with another swivelled pull off Chris Morris over short fine leg for four. Finch didn’t quite connect as the ball took the top edge and skied, but was enough to clear the fielder. What has he had for lunch?! With that, we’re taking the first Strategic Timeout.
“Go finchy boy,” says Yuvraj Singh, who is sitting out, on Twitter. The Finch hitter is definitely on a roll at Chepauk!
PWI 63/0 | Overs 8 | Uthappa 13*, Finch 48*
Aaron Finch makes room and spanks Ravichandran Ashwin over long on for the first six of the innings. Robin Uthappa does the same and tries to place his shot wide of long off, but doesn’t get enough power on it. Ten runs come off the over.
PWI 53/0 | Overs 7 | Uthappa 11*, Finch 39*
A change of ends works for Ravindra Jadeja as he comes back for his third over. The left-arm spinner gives away just five runs.
PWI 48/0 | Overs 6 | Uthappa 9*, Finch 37*
As expected, a change in bowling as Ravichandran Ashwin comes on for the last over of the Powerplay. Robin Uthappa decides to get some action by sweeping the off-spinner above fine leg for four. Pune will be very pleased with their start; they’ve made good use of the fielding restrictions.
PWI 42/0 | Overs 5 | Uthappa 4*, Finch 36*
Dirk Nannes bowls straight and short to Aaron Finch, and the latter swivels and pulls it to the fine leg fence. He gets another boundary by clearing mid on; he’s hit eight boundaries already and we’re just five overs in!
PWI 32/0 | Overs 4 | Uthappa 3*, Finch 27*
Short and wide from Ravindra Jadeja again and Aaron Finch cuts it for four on the first ball. Jadeja bowls straight then, but Finch improvises by making room and hitting him inside-out for four more to the cover boundary. Don’t think Jadeja will get a third over very soon.
PWI 23/0 | Overs 3 | Uthappa 3*, Finch 18*
Dirk Nannes makes up for his expensive first over with a brilliant one. He cramps Aaron Finch for room and almost gets him on two occasions — first by beating his outside edge by millimetres and then rapping him on the pads just outside off.
PWI 19/0 | Overs 2 | Uthappa 2*, Finch 17*
Sir Ravindra Jadeja gets a bowl early and errs by giving room to Aaron Finch. He’s not going to leave that unpunished. Finch smacks it for four through extra cover.
PWI 13/0 | Overs 1 | Uthappa 1*, Finch 12*
Aaron Finch drives Dirk Nannes straight down the ground for four on the second ball of the innings, before lofting him for four more over mid on. Next, he gets a French cut through past MS Dhoni for another boundary to fine leg. What a start!
Pune Warriors India stand-in captain Ross Taylor has won the toss against the Chennai Super Kings and has elected to bat first in the 19th match of the Indian Premier League (IPL).
Ross Taylor is leading the Pune Warriors because some elements in Chennai have banned Angelo Mathews and his countrymen from playing here for some reason. I won’t get much into that.
Yuvraj Singh also misses out this game and Steven Smith comes in along with Manish Pandey. Great to see young Smith get a game.
For Chennai, Michael Hussey has been rested and Albie Morkel gets a first game. Srikkanth Anirudha will open the batting with Murali Vijay.
Chennai Super Kings: Srikkanth Anirudha, Murali Vijay, Suresh Raina, Subramanium Badrinath, MS Dhoni (c & wk), Ravindra Jadeja, Dwayne Bravo, Albie Morkel, Chris Morris, Ravichandran Ashwin, Dirk Nannes.
Pune Warriors India: Aaron Finch, Robin Uthappa (wk), Manish Pandey, Ross Taylor (c), Abhishek Nayar, Tirumalsetti Suman, Mitchell Marsh, Steven Smith, Bhuvneshwar Kumar, Rahul Sharma, Ashok Dinda.
