MI 154/5 | Overs 20 | Pollard 6* (RCB win by 2 runs)
RCB have clinched it by two runs and Vinay Kumar almost got a hat-trick! Dinesh Karthik and Ambati Rayudu fell on consecutive deliveries to make it eight runs of two balls. Kieron Pollard stepped in and whacked a boundary straight down the ground. On the last ball, Kumar bowled in the block hole and MI could only get two. RCB have beaten MI for the first time at home.
MI 147/3 | Overs 19 | Karthik 60*, Rayudu 18*
Good over by Jaydev Unadkat; just seven runs off it. The equation still favours MI though. 10 runs required off the last six balls.
Dinesh Karthik has let loose with that Christian over. The wicketkeeper bat got down on a knee and slogged Muralitharan over the deep mid-wicket fence. 17 required off 12 balls.
Mumbai Indians’s last six had come way back in the fourth over of the innings. Dinesh Karthik decided enough is enough and hit three consecutive maximums off Dan Christian and followed it up with a boundary off a no-ball to give Mumbai their biggest over so far — 24 runs. Karthik also brought up his half-century in the process. Mumbai need one more over like this to finish things off. The required rate has suddenly dropped to nine an over.
MI 106/3 | Overs 16 | Karthik 27*, Rayudu 11*
Finally, a biggish over for Mumbai. 10 runs came off it, mainly due to an inside edge that went past the keeper to the fine-leg boundary. Mumbai are just finding it impossible to connect with the meat of the bat. Meanwhile, Pollard waits impatiently on the sidelines.
MI 96/3 | Overs 15 | Karthik 23*, Rayudu 3*
Just five runs added to MI’s score from Dan Christian’s over. Mumbai’s required run rate is over 12 now.
MI 91/3 | Overs 14 | Karthik 23*, Rayudu 1*
Rohit Sharma has been bowled by Vinay Kumar to give RCB their thrid wicket. Rohit went for the big heave down mid-wicket, but it was a poor shot to play off a full-length delivery. 66 required from six overs. Kieron Pollard, where art thou?
MI 85/2 | Overs 13 | Karthik 20*, Rohit 9*
Finally, some runs for Mumbai. Karthik and Rohit hit a boundary each to the deep point boundary. They need more such overs from now. Atleast two boundaries an over. Time for the second Strategic Timeout
Mumbai Indians need to pick up their pace here. Murali Kartik’s over yielded just five runs and the required rate for Mumbai is above 10.
MI 69/2 | Overs 11 | Karthik 12*, Rohit 1*
Another quietish over bowled by Muttiah Muralitharan. The equation is getting tedious now; Mumbai need 88 runs from 54 balls.
Ricky Ponting has been stumped and Murali Kartik gets his first wicket. So, both Mumbai openers are now back in the pavilion. Crucial stage in the match now. MI need 95 runs from the last 10 overs.
MI 58/1 | Overs 9 | Ponting 27*, Karthik 2*
Tidy over from Muralitharan. Just four runs off it. Time for the Strategic Timeout. RCB were 56 for three at this stage, so MI don’t have to panic yet.
Sachin Tendulkar has run himself out to end what was looking like a good opening stand for Mumbai. Tendulkar worked Murali Kartik down the leg and set off for a single. Ponting ran a few steps before stopping in his tracks and sent Tendulkar back. Jaydev Unadkat picked up the ball and threw it quickly to ‘keeper Arun Karthik who whipped off the bails. Tendulkar was out by the millimetre.
MI 27/0 | Overs 5 | Ponting 16*, Tendulkar 8*
Vinay Kumar comes into the attack and bowls an economical over, conceding just four runs. Similar start here for Mumbai like the one RCB had.
MI 2/0 | Overs 1 | Ponting 1*, Tendulkar 1*
Well, this is something spectacular! Ricky Ponting and Sachin Tendulkar have opened the innings for Mumbai Indians! That’s the magic of the IPL! Who would have thought this would be possible 10 years back?
RCB 156/5 | Overs 20 | Gayle 92*, Karthik 20*
Chris Gayle has pummelled RCB past the 150-mark with two fours and a six. 17 and 16 runs conceded by Munaf Patel in his last two overs. Perhaps Mitchell Johnson should have bowled the last over? RCB will be very pleased with their score after being 59 for three in 10 overs.
RCB 93/5 | Overs 14 | Gayle 54*, Karthik 2*
Chris Gayle has brought up his 13th IPL fifty with a hobbling single down square-leg. Gayle is hardly moving his feet playing his shots and is waiting for the loose deliveries. Harbhajan is doing well, bowling straight, but Gayle pounced on a full toss and a ball straying down leg, sending them crashing for four.
RCB 82/5 | Overs 13 | Gayle 45*, Karthik 0*
Jasprit Bumrah has got a third wicket on dayboo! Karun Nair is the victim and the wicket was similar to Kohli’s dismissal. Meanwhile, Chris Gayle is struggling running between the wickets. That crash with Harbhajan seems to have taken a toll.
RCB 75/4 | Overs 12 | Gayle 39*, Nair 0*
Dan Christian, after being a silent spectator to Chris Gayle’s ballistics, finally decided to have a go and perished. The Australian flicked Harbhajan straight down the throat of deep midwicket to give Mumbai their fourth wicket. One run and a wicket for MI.
RCB 74/3 | Overs 11 | Gayle 38*, Christian 4*
Chris Gayle took on his West Indian counterpart Kieron Pollard, whacking him for two boundaries and a six. The “Yes Bank Maximum” was one of the biggest ones hit so far into the stands behind long-on.
RCB 59/3 | Overs 10 | Gayle 23*, Christian 4*
Harbhajan Singh gets a bowl finally, and he has knocked down the big man Chris Gayle! After an economical first five balls, Dan Christian tried to flick Bhajji and got a leading edge which flew towards Gayle at the non-strikers. Harbhajan went for the catch and collided with Gayle as the latter fell over smiling. The big man was down for a bit, but rose eventually.
RCB 56/3 | Overs 9 | Gayle 21*, Christian 3*
Chris Gayle has let loose here, it seems. First, he whips Bumrah to the square-leg fence and follows it up with a booming straight drive for six. RCB need at least a boundary an over to get to a decent score.
RCB 44/3 | Overs 8 | Gayle 10*, Christian 2*
Chris Gayle has hit his first boundary of the match with a gentle leg glance to the fine-leg fence. RCB are still progressing at a rate under six.
RCB 36/3 | Overs 7 | Gayle 4*, Christian 1*
Jasprit Bumrah has got another wicket! Mayank Agarwal goes to smack him over mid-off, but does not manage to clear Sachin Tendulkar posted there. Dream debut for the 19-year-old! Meanwhile, Ricky Ponting has set two slips for Chris Gayle! Remarkable stuff, this!
RCB 31/2 | Overs 6 | Gayle 4*, Agarwal 1*
Jacob Oram comes in and bowls a tidy over for Mumbai. Mayank Agarwal is the new batsman in for the Challengers. Chris Gayle is being uncharacteristically quiet here. Not a single boundary scored of his bat in the first six overs!
RCB 28/2 | Overs 5 | Gayle 3*, Agarwal 0*
Jasprit Bumrah, on debut, bowls a topsy-turvy over. The youngster bowled short and wide to Virat Kohli and you cannot do that to a batsman of Kohli’s class, who spanked him for three fours off four balls. However, on the fifth delivery, Bhumrah got the ball to cut in and rap Kohli on the pads. After a loud appeal, the umpire concurred and sent the RCB captain packing for 24.
RCB 16/1 | Overs 4 | Gayle 3*, Kohli 12*
Virat Kohli smashes the first six of the match off Munaf Patel! Stepping down the track to the medium-pacer, Kohli hoicked the medium-pacer straight down the ground. Positive intent straight away from the captain.
RCB 9/1 | Overs 3 | Gayle 3*, Kohli 5*
Mitchell Johnson has cleaned up Tillakaratne Dilshan! Peach of a delivery, full-length and this time it kept straight. Dilshan went for the on drive, but misjudged the line and played across the line, mssing it by a good six inches. Brilliant start for Mumbai here! Meanwhile, Virat Kohli showed Dilshan how it’s done off a similar ball that was whipped for four wide of square leg.
RCB 2/0 | Overs 2 | Gayle 2*, Dilshan 0*
Another clean over for Mumbai. Munaf Patel keeps it straight and the pitch does the rest. Two runs from two overs for Royal Challengers.
RCB 1/0 | Overs 1 | Gayle 1*, Dilshan 0*
Mitchell Johnson starts with a beauty of an outswinger that Chris Gayle had no clue about! Pitching on middle, the ball deviated in the air and just missed Gayle’s edge, clipping the pads, before carrying to the keeper. A couple of deliveries later, it was Tillakaratne Dilshan’s turn to get foxed. This pitch has plenty of bounce and help for the bowlers, it seems. Good start for Johnson and Mumbai! Remember, there is no Lasith Malinga yet for Mumbai who is out with an injury.
Mumbai Indians captain Ricky Ponting has won the toss against Royal Challengers Bangalore in the second match of the Pepsi IPL 2013 and have elected to bowl first.
Along with Ponting, Kieron Pollard, Mitchell Johnson and Jacob Oram are the four overseas players for Mumbai. For Bangalore, its Chris Gayle, Tillakaratne Dilshan, Muttiah Muralitharan and Daniel Christian.
Interestingly, the million dollar man Glenn Maxwell is not good enough to feature in MI’s playing XI.
